Reports are coming in that Tony Blair is set to stand down as a peace envoy to the Middle East. AP is reporting that the former Prime Minister has tendered his resignation to the Quartet on the Middle East — consisting of representatives from the US, EU, Russia and the UN — and will leave in June. Blair has worked for the Quartet for several years, joining on a wave of publicity and hope in 2007. But with the collapse of the US-led peace talks last year, as well as continual questions about his business links, his efforts to bring peace to the region have been doomed. Given that Blair’s foreign policy reputation is already toxic both here and abroad, his failure to make a breakthrough with the Quartet will only damage his legacy further.

With Chuka Umunna out, the choice for Labour party members is simple. If they want to win the next election they will choose Liz Kendall as their next leader. There is a very simple test for suitability for the job: their reply to the question ‘did the last Labour government spend too much money?’ Kendall is the only one who has passed. On yesterday’s Newsnight she was straightforward: yes, Labour did spend too much. Yvette Cooper, by contrast, said on Radio 4 this morning: 'I think there were things that we were spending wrongly on, there were issues that we would have been spending money, too much money on – for example there were things that went wrong with the NHS computer system, with all sorts of things like that – but the deficit at the time was 0.

What’s Labour's problem? Following its fantastic drubbing at the polls, the most common answer to that question is that the party has for too long ignored its traditional base: working-class voters. Among media Labourites in particular, those currently writing emotionally unhinged articles about how isolated they feel in this cruel new Britain — bless ’em — this has become the go-to excuse for Labour's rubbishness in recent years. Yes, there's the issue of Tory-backing Rupert Murdoch's stranglehold on people's mushy minds, they say, revealing their disdain for tabloid readers. And there's the apparently irresistible lure of the Tories' politics of fear, which they believe ensnared a dumb electorate, once again exposing their low view of the little people.

Tony Blair once counted Noel Gallagher as one of New Labour's key celebrity backers. However, under Ed Miliband's leadership, Labour can rely on no such support from the musician. In an interview on Alan Carr's Chatty Man, which airs tonight, the former Oasis member said he was unable to endorse any politician out of the current line-up: 'I'm not sure I can get behind any of them at the minute. I dunno. The fact that Cameron didn't turn up for the debate is a disgrace. I think that Miliband, if he gets in, is just going to fail us.' And why would Miliband fail? 'Because he is a f**king communist.' Mr S suspects it's time for Blair to show off his highly prized diplomatic skills and have a word. That's if Labour can afford his services.

Is Labour's war on the media finally over? After Mr S reported this week that journalists were jeered for asking questions at a Tony Blair event, relations between the party and the media appear to have warmed. As Ed Miliband and Ed Balls head north of the border to campaign with Jim Murphy, it fell to the Scottish leader to make peace with hacks. Opening up their press conference in Edinburgh to journalists' questions, Murphy declared they would let some 'people' ask questions too, once the pesky media had been dealt with: 'It's only journalists with their hand up at the moment, but they're people too.' A notable warming in relations, Mr S thanks Murphy for clearing that one up!

The editor of The Spectator isn’t the only person thinking about the prospect of Ed Miliband becoming the next Prime Minister. Eighty educationalists have signed a letter in the Daily Mail today warning about the danger of a future Labour government curtailing academy freedoms. They’re concerned about Ed Miliband’s pledge that Labour would reintroduce 'a proper local authority framework for all schools' – which sounds a lot like placing all taxpayer-funded schools back under local authority control. The letter-writers flag up two freedoms they are particularly concerned about: the freedom that academies and free schools have to set their own pay and conditions and the freedom they have over the curriculum. They’re right to be worried.

Finally, the presidential race got interesting. The thought of Hillary Clinton vs Jeb Bush was too much of a rerun of the same old thing: big government liberal vs big government conservative arguing about how best to spend Americans’ money. And they both share a taste for military excursions – white boots marching in foreign lands. Well, now there’s a candidate officially in the race who stands for something completely different. Rand Paul’s libertarian crusade could be about the most exciting candidacy in my political lifetime. It won’t star the most exciting candidate. Senator Paul (Kentucky) wears the standard uniform of the college Republican: blue blazer, red tie, grey slacks. The voice could send you to sleep; the face is forgettable.
