Question time

Last night David Dimbleby was joined on Question Time by a panel comprised of Jacob Rees-Mogg, Piers Morgan, Emily Thornberry, Mark Reckless and Hannah Bardell. As talk turned to the prospect of Heathrow expansion, Rees-Mogg -- who supports the plans -- said that for all the fuss about noise caused by planes, he had suffered few problems with this when he lived near Slough. At which point Dimbleby couldn't help but interrupt and change the topic -- asking if this had been when the Tory MP attended Eton. Alas for all of Dimbleby's wit, the BBC presenter -- who attended Charterhouse -- received a reply that he had not been expecting.

Last night's episode of Question Time saw David Dimbleby joined in Stoke-on-Trent by Sajid Javid, Lucy Powell, Ukip's Paul Nuttall, the Sun's managing editor Stig Abell and Paris Lees, the transgender rights activist. With Jeremy Corbyn the main topic on the agenda following the Sun's story this week claiming Corbyn failed to bow deeply enough at the Remembrance Sunday service at Whitehall, would Corbyn's supporters prove to all the merits of a new 'kinder' politics? At first, it looked like Corbyn's call to 'treat people with respect' and with no 'rudeness' may have been taken on board, as even Javid seemed keen to take part in the new regime.

Last night's episode of Question Time saw David Dimbleby relocate to Cardiff to join Charlotte Church, Charles Moore, Stephen Crabb, Labour's Stephen Kinnock and Plaid Cymru's Leanne Wood for a Welsh debate. While questions were raised about the future of Plaid Cymru after a lacklustre election result, the first topic on the agenda touched on whether Jeremy Corbyn could still be Prime Minister now he has said that he would never, ever use a nuclear weapon. With Kinnock struggling to defend Corbyn's comments while also sticking to his own views supporting nuclear weapons as a deterrent, it fell to Corbynista Church to praise the Labour leader's comments as 'commendable': 'I think that it's commendable.

Hats off to John McDonnell. We've all been fretting about how the Corbyn gang would cope against the media slick Tories. We all think that, despite the appeal of conviction politics, a shadow chancellor such as McDonnell will be eaten alive by the Tory front bench. John McDonnell's performance on BBC Question Time last night suggested otherwise. Question Time is a good test for politicians: they have to look and sound passionate while saying nothing much at all. McDonnell did exactly that, and with gusto. He masterfully shrugged off his 'joke' about killing Margaret Thatcher. When asked about his support for the IRA, he managed almost simultaneously to apologise and to take credit for bringing peace to Northern Ireland.

Anxious viewers tuned into Question Time last night to watch live coverage of the ongoing Nigel Farage crisis. Quite a week for the Ukip leader. Up and down. In and out. And back in again. His pitch for a Westminster power-base imploded on election day. And he promptly quit, as promised. But his resignation fared no better than his parliamentary campaign. His withdrawal was rejected. Won’t anything go right for him? He explained to a glum audience in Uxbridge that after losing South Thanet he retreated to ‘a darkened room’ to examine his future. ‘I was going to walk out of there a free man but they dragged me back!’ This jaunty account received not a bat’s squeak of laughter from the crowd.

Tonight’s Question Time special with Cameron, Miliband and Clegg provided the best television of this campaign so far. A well-informed audience relentlessly pressed the three leaders on their weakest points. At the end of the evening, an ICM poll for the Guardian gave the evening to Cameron by 44 per cent to Miliband’s 38 per cent with Clegg garnering 19 per cent support. Miliband’s didn’t have a great night and his most awkward moment came on the record of the last Labour government. The audience were audibly irritated by his repeated refusal to concede that the last Labour government had spent too much money. Under questioning from the audience, Miliband also went further than he previously has in ruling out a deal with the SNP.
