Biden’s vaccine drive is too slow

I’m hooked on vaccine data. Barely an hour at my desk goes by without hitting refresh on a website telling me how many doses of Covid-19 vaccines have gone into arms around the world. A good day in either the US, where I live, or the UK, where I’m from, brings a frisson of excitement not dissimilar to what I imagine a gambling addict feels when his number hits. Slow progress sends me into a sulk. Either way, I need my fix. The cause of my addiction is not complicated: I am fed up of this wretched pandemic. And the more aggressive the vaccination drive, the sooner it is over.

Secondary-school children returning to school from 8 March will be required to wear masks in classrooms, at least for several weeks. Boris Johnson’s roadmap out of lockdown moves at a much slower pace than many of his backbenchers would like. Boris hints at a 'no jab, no job' policy

The most striking moment of Monday night’s press conference was Chris Whitty’s declaration that it was the ‘professional responsibility’ on health and social care staff to get the vaccine. Latest vaccine data is even better than we had hoped

The two vaccines approved and in use in Britain showed high efficacy rates in trials, but it takes time for data to creep through on efficacy in the real-world. Vaccination offers us a road out of lockdown. Let’s take it

As an epidemiologist and doctor who volunteered to return to the frontline in both waves, I have seen first hand the death and suffering from Covid. And, also, the knock-on effects on those affected by cancelled services. Deciding when to end lockdown is, of course, a difficult decision, but I now fear the costs of lockdown will soon start beginning to outweigh the benefits. There is no doubt that Covid-19 has the capability to rapidly overwhelm our healthcare system and cause unprecedented casualties. Indeed, what has transpired over the last year suggests that Neil Ferguson’s figure – that the virus was capable of taking 500,000 lives – looks fairly accurate.

Last month, Imperial College’s React study claimed that new cases of Covid were static or even rising slightly. Before we had vaccines, NHS Test and Trace was supposed to be the breakthrough that would return us to a normal life. After all, testing, tracing and isolating contacts of infected people was credited with keeping Covid infections down in South Korea, Taiwan and elsewhere, so why wouldn’t it work here?  Instead, we had a second wave and the return to normality was reversed. Dutch descend into curfew chaos

Boris Johnson hints at Covid exit strategy

What will the government’s roadmap out of lockdown look like? That’s a question being asked frequently as ministers get to work on a plan for easing restrictions. Why are so many health workers turning down the vaccine?

On Saturday the government hit its target of administering a first vaccine dose to 15 million of the highest-risk groups for Covid 19.
