Andrea Leadsom promises not to be the candidate for the rich… while speaking at restaurant of the super-rich

Today Andrea Leadsom has officially launched her campaign to be the next Tory leader. Speaking at the Cinnamon Club, the former banker declared that she would not be the candidate for the rich; 'the richest people in Britain will not be my priority'. However, Mr S cant help but wonder if she should have gone for a different choice of venue if she wants to be taken seriously as a voice of the working people. After all, the Cinnamon Club is one of Westminster's most expensive restaurants. A favourite of the metropolitan elite, the Indian restaurant serves a special gin punch for £400 a bowl. Meanwhile it's hard to get through a lunch there without reaching triple figures.

Boris Johnson’s campaign manager goes for Gove – ‘an emotional need to gossip’

After Michael Gove turned on his one-time ally Boris Johnson and decided to run for leader himself, there was disbelief and anger among the former Mayor of London's supporters. While Jake Berry declared that there was a special place in hell for Gove, his fellow Tory MP Ben Wallace has used a comment piece in today's Telegraph to claim the Justice Secretary has an 'emotional need to gossip, particularly when drink is taken'. In the article, Wallace explains why he believes Gove just isn't up to being Tory leader -- let alone Prime Minister.

The march against democracy – have we hit peak Remania?

So 17 million people vote to take Britain out of the European Union  – but 40,000 of the Remainers took to the streets of London today to protest. We heard the voices of Britain’s growing anti-democratic movement: those who believe that Brexit was the result of consulting voters who were confused, malign, northern – or all three. Who, the Bremain protesters seemed to ask, are these people? Where the hell is Dunstable? Why do we Londoners allow them them vote? Every revolution has its reactionaries, and they were on the march today. Mr S was reassured to see the well-heeled crowd mocking themselves, with placards referencing 80s and 90s pop songs (“Never gonna give EU up”, “Nothing compares to EU”) etc.

Knives out for Gove: Tory MP threatens the Justice Secretary’s manhood

Although Mr S is running his own Michael Gove inspired Game of Thrones competition for readers, the Justice Secretary's colleagues also can't seem to resist sticking the knife-in when it comes to picking which machiavellian character Gove best resembles. After Gove turned on his former ally Boris Johnson, Ben Wallace, the Conservative MP for Wyre and Preston, has claimed that when it comes to George RR Martin's fantasy novels, Gove is Theon Greyjoy -- or at least will be once Wallace is finished with him. Given that Greyjoy is best known for having his penis cut off, this doesn't bode overly well for Gove. https://twitter.

Sadiq Khan puts Boris’s three ‘nearly new’ water cannons up for sale

With Boris Johnson's hopes of making it into Number 10 dashed, the former Mayor of London is now on a damage limitation exercise with the focus on retaining his dignity. Bruised from Theresa May's dig yesterday that his EU negotiation experience amounts to his controversial purchase of three 'nearly new' water cannons, it's safe to say that Johnson would now like that particular purchase in the past. Alas Johnson can expect to hear much more about the water cannons in the coming weeks. Johnson's successor Sadiq Khan has decided now is the right time to try and sell the cannons -- pointing to the fact that they have never been used thanks to May deeming them a safety risk.

Sarah Vine’s media warning fails to hold true

At times this week it has seemed as though Sarah Vine will soon be running the country -- that is, if she isn't secretly already. As well as informing readers, through her Daily Mail column, that she -- along with her husband Michael Gove -- has been ‘charged with implementing the instructions of 17 million people’ following the Leave vote, Vine is reported to have played a pivotal role in the Justice Secretary's decision to turn his back on Boris Johnson and run for leader. In fact, the first sign that all was not well between the Johnson and Gove camps came when Vine seemingly accidentally sent an email on the topic to a member of the public.

Competition: find a Game of Thrones analogy for Michael Gove’s usurping of Boris

In the bloody annals of Westminster history, has there ever been an act of treachery greater than Michael Gove's knifing of Boris Johnson yesterday? Perhaps not, but there is probably an analogy in the HBO series Game of Thrones. The Justice Secretary is a great fan of the series, and often uses it as a metaphor for politics. Perhaps When he went to visit the Spectator's James Delingpole he talks about his love of the series. Here it is:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnXoQeGnT4Q Perhaps he was inspired by one of the episodes - but which one? Which scene? Which character? Answers below, please. A bottle of Pol Roger will be sent to the best entry. They will be judged by James Delingpole.

Tory MP: there is a very deep pit reserved in hell for Michael Gove

Who ever does become the new Conservative leader is going to face a difficult challenge uniting the party, let alone leading the Brexit negotiations. Following Michael Gove's decision to run for Tory leader without bothering to tell Boris Johnson, a number of BoJo allies are distinctly unimpressed with the Justice Secretary. Perhaps none more so than Jake Berry. The Conservative MP for Rossendale and Darwen has taken to Twitter to declare that there is a special place in hell for people like Gove. Mr S suspects Gove can safely assume Berry will not be getting behind his last minute leadership bid. Update: Berry isn't backing down... even if he is deleting his tweets.

Is Michael Gove the Brutus to Boris Johnson’s Caesar?

Boris Johnson managed to surprise commentariats and colleagues alike today when he used his supposed leadership launch to announce that he was actually bowing out of the race. Johnson's allies feel that he was forced into the decision after his fellow Brexiteer Michael Gove announced just an hour earlier that he would stand in his own right. With Johnson believing that Gove was helping rally support for his leadership bid, this has been viewed by many as the ultimate betrayal. Although the former Mayor of London is yet to directly comment on his one-time friend's betrayal, was there in fact an oblique reference to it in his speech?

Jeremy Corbyn sparks anti-Semitism row… at Labour’s anti-Semitism inquiry press conference

Given that Jeremy Corbyn set-up Labour's anti-Semitism inquiry to examine the extent of the problem in the party, he will have been hoping that it would help resolve the crisis. In fact, given that Shami Chakrabarti's inquiry concluded today that the Labour Party is not overrun by anti-Semitism or other forms of racism (though there is an 'occasionally toxic atmosphere') you could be forgiven for thinking it's done exactly that. Alas things haven't gone quite to plan today thanks to... Jeremy Corbyn.

Boris Johnson’s water cannon splurge comes back to haunt him

Today Boris Johnson has found himself attacked on all sides with his leadership bid now seen to be over before it even began. With his fellow Brexiteer Michael Gove running against him for leader, Theresa May has used her own leadership launch to pour cold water on BoJo's ability to lead the country. The most cutting remark came when she was asked about her ability to lead negotiations with countries like Germany. At which point she brought up Boris's track record on... buying water cannons: 'I seem to remember the last time he did a deal with the Germans, he came back with three nearly new water cannons.

Sarah Vine sends Tory leadership email to a member of the public

Oh dear. This morning Sarah Vine surprised Daily Mail readers after she declared in her column that both she and her husband Michael Gove had been 'charged with implementing the instructions of 17 million people' following the Leave vote. While Vine's central role in the Brexit negotiations prompted laughter in some quarters, it now transpires that she has been taking on a very hands-on role indeed. Sky News have been passed an email from Vine setting out the Justice Secretary's leadership plotting after she accidentally cc'ed in a member of public. The email -- sent yesterday -- raises some awkward questions for the pair.

Watch: David Cameron tells Jeremy Corbyn to resign – ‘for heaven’s sake man, go!’

As Jeremy Corbyn faces even more Shadow Cabinet resignations today, it's becoming difficult to locate a Labour MP who thinks he should stay in the post. Now the Prime Minister has added his voice to the cause. David Cameron -- who is stepping down in the autumn -- used today's PMQs to call on Corbyn to resign: 'It might be in my party's interest for him to sit there, it's not in the national interest and I would say for heaven's sake man, go!' Mr S suspects that this will only heighten the Corbynistas' desire for Jezza to stay put.

Sarah Vine reveals the Gove household reaction to Brexit: ‘you were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off’

Since Leave triumphed in the EU referendum, there have been growing concerns that the Brexiteers were not suitably prepared for success at the polls. As well as no clear plan of action, Boris Johnson and Michael Gove have been uncharacteristically quiet since the result came in. Happily Gove's wife Sarah Vine has now filled us in on what the Justice Secretary has been up to over the past few days. In her Daily Mail column, Vine reveals that the first she heard of the result was near 5am on Friday when Gove was woken up from his slumbers by a phone call: 'I was just drifting back to sleep when my husband’s mobile rang. Fumbling, he picked up the call. I could hear every word. "Michael?" an excited, if slightly weary, voice said. "Michael, guess what? We’ve won!

Jeremy Corbyn decides Shadow Cabinet broadcast is a ‘bad idea’… after filming begins

As the Labour party slowly implodes, Jeremy Corbyn is doing his best to keep the show on the road. To do this, the Leader's Office today agreed that it would be a good idea to let Sky News film a meeting of the new Shadow Cabinet. Although Corbyn's director of communications Seumas Milne clearly hoped this would prove that everything was tickety boo, the Labour leader had doubts. Unfortunately for everyone concerned, his doubts only surfaced once Sky had actually arrived and started filming: https://twitter.com/SkyNews/status/747777048706351104 Corbyn can be heard muttering that 'this seems a bad idea', before summoning Milne to share his doubts. After some awkward exchanges they pause filming.

Listen: Diane Abbott says it’s ‘Westminster-centric’ to ask if Corbyn can win an election

With Jeremy Corbyn's Shadow Cabinet now somewhat depleted, brains at Labour are left with less choice when it comes to who to send onto the airwaves to protect the leader's honour. As a result, readers ought to expect to hear a lot more from Diane Abbott -- the newly appointed Shadow Health Secretary -- in the coming days. Alas this may not be exactly what the beleaguered Labour leader needs as he continues to try and fend off the threat of a vote of no confidence. This morning Abbott appeared on the Today programme to make the case for Corbyn's survival. Abbott said that if there was another leadership election, she was confident that Corbyn stood a very good chance of winning once again.

Coffee Shots: Corbyn’s comrades enjoy late night tête-à-tête

As Labour MPs drowned their sorrows in Strangers' Bar last night following a fractious meeting of the PLP, over in the Red Lion the pro-Corbyn contingent gathered for a pint. Mr S's mole reports that Momentum's Jon Lansman met with Richard Burgon, the Shadow Justice Secretary, and Seb Corbyn at the Westminster watering hole to give the duo a much-needed pep talk. 'You've just got to carry on,' Lansman was overheard urging the pair. With a vote of no confidence now passed in Corbyn's leadership, their resolve may fade in the coming days.

Watch: Labour’s new shadow Justice Secretary turns on his fellow MPs at Momentum rally

While Corbyn faced an open revolt from MPs at tonight's meeting of the PLP, over in Parliament Square the Corbyn fightback got underway as hundreds gathered for a Momentum rally in support of the Labour leader. Not content with the drama at the meeting, Richard Burgon -- Labour’s former blunder-prone shadow City minister who has just been promoted to Shadow Justice Secretary --  left early to attend the rally. In his speech to the Corbynistas, he turned on his fellow MPs, accusing them of 'behaving like bullies' inside Parliament: https://twitter.com/katyballs/status/747493155621199873 'I think everyone in the Parliamentary Labour party can hear you shouting tonight.

Watch: Jeremy Corbyn heckled by his own MPs – ‘resign!’

It's not proving to be a great day for Jeremy Corbyn. After over half of his Shadow Cabinet resigned, the Labour leader has now faced a revolt in the Chamber. While giving a statement on the European referendum, Corbyn called for MPs to refrain from in-fighting: 'The country will thank neither the benches in front of me or the benches behind for indulging in internal factoring maneuvering at this time.' Alas his words on party unity hit a bum note with those on the Labour benches. MPs looked incredulous as Corbyn spoke, and shortly began a chorus of heckles urging him to resign -- with Toby Perkins and Chris Evans leading the cries. Tonight's meeting of the PLP is shaping up to be box office...

Jeremy Corbyn’s new Shadow Defence Secretary goes MIA on first day

Given the flak that Tom Watson  received for partying until 4am at Glastonbury on Saturday as his party imploded, one could be forgiven for thinking that any remaining Labour MPs at the annual festival would have got out of there as soon as possible. However, there is a rumour doing the rounds that Corbyn's new Shadow Defence Secretary Clive Lewis will not make it to Defence Questions today as he is... still on his way back from Glastonbury. While Lewis's office is yet to respond to Mr S's request for comment, Corbyn can take heart that the Labour MP has at least been flying the flag for him at the music festival.
