However, is a change a coming? Mr S only asks after Theresa May's soft Brexit proposal appeared to get a number of Tory MPs wondering who would do a better job. Trying to make Christian politicians squirm is a favourite occasional sport among political broadcasters in Westminster. The former Lib Dem leader Tim Farron was, for a season, the preferred quarry as he writhed for the cameras most obligingly under increasingly forensic questioning of his views on gay marriage. More recently, the attention has turned to Jacob Rees-Mogg, who has now endured several rounds of on-air questioning about his Catholic faith. Although the comments are unlikely to go down well in Downing Street, there is one aspect of the Moggster's comments that will ease concern in No 10. On the recurring topic of an early election, Rees-Mogg says such talk is dangerous – and something that should be avoided: 'The national polling level is very encouraging.

Oh dear. As anxiety grows about the Theresa May's customs union stance, Jacob Rees-Mogg has this afternoon told hacks that the government's mooted customs partnership is 'completely cretinous'. The Moggster's tough talk will play out well among Brexiteers who fear May's own resolve has weakened in recent months. What will play out less well with the Brexit camp, however, is a comment made by a European commissioner appearing to make this very point.

It's red letter day for Theresa May. Only rather than a happy momentous occasion, the Prime Minister's red letter day consists of receiving a letter listing all the Brexiteers' red lines on the EU. With the inner Cabinet due to meet on Thursday for their 'away day' to decide a Brexit negotiating position, the influential European Research Group have sent May a letter listing their 'Brexit demands'. Signed by 62 backbench MPs, the letter – in which the group pledge their 'continued, strong backing' for May and her Brexit plan as per the Lancaster House speech – kindly offers the Prime Minister a list of suggestions on how to achieve the best Brexit.

Last week Theresa May came under fire from grassroots activists not over her weak and wobbly leadership but over reported proposals to limit the say local party members have when it comes to selecting candidates. So, it's rather unfortunate for the Prime Minister that the man currently favoured by the membership as her successor is with the grassroots on this one. Speaking on the ConservativeHome Moggcast, Jacob Rees-Mogg criticised plans to centralise power on candidate selection as 'undemocratic'. He offered a cautionary tale of his own – had central office had their way the Moggster would not be in Parliament today.

With doubts about Theresa May's leadership rising, talk has turned – once again – to who might replace her. Jacob Rees-Mogg has topped this month's ConservativeHome leadership poll of members. So, is Moggmentum what the public needs? That's the suggestion made by Michael Portillo. Although Jacob Rees-Mogg missed out on a promotion in last week's reshuffle, the Moggster has at least got a new string to add to his bow. The Conservative backbencher has been appointed chairman of the all-powerful 'European Research Group' – replacing Suella Fernandes. The group has been described by the Times as the 'most powerful opposition force in British politics' but in effect is a place for the Conservative party's most dedicated Brexiteers to congregate, liaise and come up with a counter to any position (government or not) that looks a bit too Remain for their liking. In that vein, they have a special Tory WhatsApp group – separate to the main Conservative MP one – to meet their aims.

Although Theresa May looks safe in No 10 for the time being, chatter continues behind closed doors over who her eventual successor could be. While Gavin Williamson and Boris Johnson are both seen to have difficulty hiding their own leadership ambitions, it's Jacob Rees-Mogg who most regularly tops the polls when it comes to Tory members' preference for leader. Should he decide to take the plunge, he need look no further than jungle queen Georgia ‘Toff’ Toffolo for his first celebrity endorsement. The Made in Chelsea star – who just won I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! has given an interview to the Sunday Times in which she confesses her love for the Moggster: 'Zac Goldsmith, Jacob Rees-Mogg. I fancy them all. Jacob’s a sex god.

After a lacklustre policy announcement on tuition fees followed by a disappointing turn on the Marr show, Theresa May's Conservative conference has not got off to the best of starts. However, as MPs fume about their leader's failings, members are at least managing to get excited about one Tory politician... Step forward Jacob Rees-Mogg. This afternoon Moggmentum hit Tory conference. Eager conference attendees started queuing for a Jacob Rees-Mogg fringe event on Brexit an hour before it began. With half an hour to go, the queue was so long it blocked the entrance to the conference centre. Security staff then had to bend it so that the fire exit was not blocked by Mogg's many admirers. Unfortunately the room was too small to cater for the sheer demand for Mogg.

Although Theresa May did manage to prevent a revolt breaking out after her speech in Florence yesterday, that's not to say anyone in Cabinet is particularly pleased by her words. The Prime Minister did buy herself more time – but failed to clearly say where she what direction she was planning to go in that period. On the backbenches, Conservative MPs have less reason to hold their tongue over such concerns – as Jacob Rees-Mogg demonstrated on Newsnight.
