Why can’t Elon Musk leave Britain alone?

Why is Elon Musk so obsessed with what’s going on in Britain? The billionaire owner of Tesla and X has been busy posting on his social media platform about the murder of Henry Nowak and what it says about the state of British policing. What does Musk actually know about policing in this country?

What the tech mogul definitely does know about is how to stir the pot. According to a report in the Financial Times, Musk has written more than 110 posts, retweets and replies about British politics since last Wednesday on X. This is almost three times the share devoted to his company SpaceX, which is valued at $1.8 trillion ahead of its highly anticipated IPO next week.

Musk is all fired up about the murder of 18-year-old Henry, which has led to accusations of “two-tier policing” after it emerged police had arrested him for alleged racial abuse as he lay dying. There were violent clashes with police in Southampton this week near to where he was killed by Vickrum Digwa, who was given a life sentence on Monday. Musk criticized how “heinously” Nowak was treated by the police in a series of posts:

Musk claims to care about the Henry Nowaks of this world but he really doesn’t

The West has created an utterly evil state religion where an accusation of “racism” is the gravest offense that can be committed, even worse than rape or murder!

The billionaire vowed to fund a wrongful death lawsuit against the police officers who arrested Nowak. Why? No one, least of all the dead student’s family, is asking for his help.

Footage released this week showed one of the police officers refusing to believe Nowak when he said he had been stabbed. The video caused universal outrage and condemnation. There are plenty of questions that need answering over the police response to the murder, and an investigation is underway by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

Anyone who really cares about justice and the truth will let the investigators go about their work. Musk has no role to play in any of this, so why stick his oar in? He might be better employed turning his attentions to his own businesses.

Grok, the Musk-owned AI platform, was among the sites that falsely identified a former police officer as being involved in Nowak’s arrest. Christi Hill, who left Hampshire Police in April 2024 (long before the murder of Nowak in December last year) said in an interview that she had been forced into hiding because of the “onslaught” of threats after being wrongly identified. That’s an injustice right there, Elon. Deal with it.

Keir Starmer is right to accuse Musk of trying to “whip up division” over Nowak’s murder. It is a significant toughening of language from the Prime Minister about the X owner, and not before time. Speaking during a visit to York, Starmer accused Musk of “interfering” in British politics:

We need also to assert who we are as a country, because Musk, again, has been interfering in our politics in the last few days, trying to whip up division – that is not who we are in Britain.

In Britain, we are reasonable, tolerant people. When we have a terrible case, like Henry’s case, Henry Nowak, we react calmly, as his family have done.

This is a welcome reminder that there is a family at the heart of this tragedy, who Downing Street said that Starmer would have private talks with. In a meeting with the Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, the murdered teenager’s parents urged all political parties and religions to help rebuild trust in the police. The Tory leader deserves praise for her measured response to this tragedy, including outlining her thoughts on how equality should be dealt with under the law. After the meeting, she said:

Henry’s family do not want anger to tear communities apart. They are a family who have friends across faith and race, and so did Henry. His family want his memory to help bring our society together.

Powerful words indeed. Such sentiments are a million miles removed from the interventions of Musk and his egregious social media platforms, much more focused on creating division. Musk claims to care about the Henry Nowaks of this world but he really doesn’t. Those cheering him on from the sidelines as some sort of Messiah – a man with a deep understanding of Britain’s political and social ills – need a reality check. The tech billionaire is no friend to Britain or ordinary Britons. He has no one’s interests at heart but his own. Give it a rest, Elon, and leave this country alone.
