Tips for Sandown and Newmarket tomorrow

Some out-of-form sprinters head the market at Sandown tomorrow for the Group 3 Coral Charge (1.50 p.m.). If the likes of Asfoora, Rumstar and Shagraan return to form, they will be tough to beat, but that’s quite a big ‘if’ given their lacklustre recent racetrack performances.

On the face of it, trainer Jack Channon’s GETREADYTORUMBLE also has moderate form this season but he has not had much luck in running in two of his last three starts. Notably, last time out, he reared leaving the stalls, losing several lengths, in the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot.

This four-year-old grey gelding needs to find some improvement on official ratings to win tomorrow and he may not have the best draw out on a wing in stall ten but I am happy to back him at double-figure odds with the excellent Callum Rodriguez in the saddle. The suggestion is 1 point each way at 10-1 with bet365, paying three places.

Scottish handler Iain Jardine has his string in sparkling form

I put up Cerulean Bay last week for the Coral Golden Mile at Glorious Goodwood in the hope he would be kept fresh for that race at the end of this month. However, trainer David O’Meara is bringing him out quickly following his Royal Ascot run last month to contest tomorrow’s Coral Challenge (2.25 p.m.).

It’s a highly competitive one-mile handicap and Cerulean Bay does not have strong course form at Sandown. So, on balance, although Cerulean Bay could easily win tomorrow, I will go instead for another horse at a similar price in the shape of the Richard Hannon-trained CLASSIC.

This six-year-old gelding has run some of his best races at Sandown, winning twice and placing twice more at the course. He was also impressive when landing a 15-runner handicap at Newbury in May, form that has worked out well. Back Classic 1 point each at 12-1 with bet365, Paddy Power or Sky Bet, all paying five places.

I have already put up a bet for tomorrow’s big race at Sandown, the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse (3.35 p.m.). I would have preferred that Irish maestro Aidan O’Brien hadn’t decided to run both Constitution River and Hawk Mountain, when he had initially indicated it would be one horse or the other.

I would also have preferred softer ground for my ante-post bet, Gethin, but the money is already down and it’s still a good bet at 9-1 three places – whereas Gethin is now 4-1 two places with most bookies. Saddadd and A Boy Named Susie both have chances so a place for Gethin is anything but guaranteed.

Scottish handler Iain Jardine has his string in sparkling form – nine winners from 31 runners for a winning strike rate of 29 per cent. His six-year-old gelding PADDY THE SQUIRE is an admirably consistent horse and he looks overpriced at Newmarket tomorrow for the Betway Old Newton Cup Handicap (3.15 p.m.).

Paddy the Squire was second in this race last year, beaten four lengths by Plage De Havre, who will again re-oppose tomorrow but on worse terms at the weights. Back Paddy The Squire 1 point each way at 8-1 with bet365, paying four places in a race in which the short-priced favourite Klassleader will be hard to beat.

Next weekend I will be taking a look at the top meetings at both Newmarket and York, with the former track hosting the Group 1 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup over six furlongs.
