DC mayor booed by Nats and Phillies fans

From our US edition

Hill Country bye-bye-Q Cockburn wishes farewell to karaoke mainstay and watches baseball fans fight DC is evolving. Cockburn honored the memory of Hill Country Barbecue Karaoke on Wednesday night, ahead of the downtown hotspot closing its doors for good today. No tickets were available at the door and the line snaked throughout the restaurant as Hill staffers, hacks and college students pored in for one last singalong. The live band whipped through staples such as “Mr. Brightside,” “Redneck Woman” and “Before He Cheats” (twice). A number of veterans also took to the stage: one former host told the crowd that he’d had his first kiss with his now-wife upstairs.

Which member of the ‘Houthi PC small group’ chat are you?

From our US edition

Most people use groupchats to share memes, organize brunch or gossip. The Trump administration plans air strikes. After Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg was inadvertently included in the "Houthi PC small group" Signal chat by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, administration officials were eager to stress that no classified information was included in the unofficial chat. As a result, Goldberg published screenshots of the full conversation this morning. The messages offer a glimpse into not just the views of various cabinet members on foreign affairs; they reveal the texting styles of some of the most consequential government officials in the world. Some are relatable. "Having read thru the full Houthi PC small group logs, I've come to the sad realization that I'm the J.D.

You can buy Melania Trump’s wedding dress on eBay for $45,000

From our US edition

Melania Trump’s one-of-a-kind wedding dress is on sale for an asking price of $45,000 on eBay. The ivory duchesse satin dress was worn at the 2005 wedding between the future president and first lady – and also featured on the cover of Vogue magazine, the sole instance of international model Melania appearing on a Vogue cover. Jill Biden, meanwhile, has two to her name. The Christian Dior gown was designed by John Galliano. It took over 500 hours to hand-sew 1,500 Swarovski diamonds onto its 13-foot train. Its reported original manufacturer’s suggested retail price was $210,000, but it will now be sold at a fraction of the price after being worn only a handful of times.

Sad: DC only joint-second in national excessive drinking

From our US edition

District winos Washington second for excessive drinking – behind Montana Cockburn’s malign influence appears to be spreading its way across the capital: new data reveals that DC is now tied second in the nation for having the most excessive drinkers, alongside North Dakota and Iowa. Only Montana has the district beat, according to a 2025 update to the County Health Rankings and Roadmaps report from the University of Wisconsin’s Population Health Institute.

Ex-Media Matters influencer runs for Congress

From our US edition

Ex-Media Matters influencer Kat Abughazaleh announced a run for the US Congress today, telling Democrats, “It’s time to drop the excuses and grow a fucking spine.” Abughazaleh is fed up with the Democrats “cowering to Trump,” and says the party should be “standing up to authoritarians, not shrinking away when the fight gets tough.” So she decided to run herself. Why is Jeremy Boreing exiting the Daily Wire?

From our US edition

Wired for sound Rumors abound about god king’s exit The right-wing media rumor mill threatened to spin off its axis earlier this week with the shock announcement that “god king” Jeremy Boreing was stepping down as co-CEO of the Daily Wire. Boreing, a keen film enthusiast who starred, wrote and directed in the Wire’s comedy movie Lady Ballers, is withdrawing to “focus on creative projects for the company,” per Axios’s Sara Fischer. The DW’s many detractors had a field day with the news – speculating that there was more to the story. Boreing and Ben Shapiro had fallen out, one hater claimed, and were retaining different PR agents to brief against each other!

Trump personnel office rejects longtime Republican aides for admin roles

From our US edition

Can you pass the MAGA moral purity test? The White House’s Presidential Personnel Office is ticking off Republicans with some of its policy hires – or rejections. While President Donald Trump and Elon Musk are dead set on slashing government jobs via the Department of Government Efficiency, some in the GOP are frustrated that PPO is rejecting political appointees with apparently sterling MAGA credentials. They feel that PPO is flexing its muscles over both agency heads and Republican senators. Both groups have made requests for specific hires only to see their chosen candidates rejected by PPO, oftentimes with virtually no explanation, multiple high-level spurned applicants told Cockburn.

French politician calls for return of Statue of Liberty

From our US edition

The Statue of Liberty was given as a gift by France, the United States’s oldest ally, to celebrate our centennial anniversary as an independent state. Now, as the US moves toward its quarter-millennial anniversary, Member of the European Parliament Raphaël Glucksmann is asking for it back. Glucksmann said to supporters he would tell Americans that, “We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently you despise it. So it will be just fine here at home.”  The statue was originally called La liberté éclairant le monde (Liberty Enlightening the World).

The Senate dresses down

From our US edition

If DC wants to eschew its reputation as being “Hollywood for ugly people,” politicos could start by dressing better. While the Senate has been in a marathon session that’s included several late-night votes, the breakdown in dress code has been remarkable in recent days — and the problem goes beyond Senator John Fetterman’s reluctance to wear a collared shirt if civilization depended on it. Much of the blame can be laid at the feet of “Derek Guy” — a pseudonymous self-styled menswear expert who is more reply guy than Louis Vuitton reincarnate. In his latest missive, Guy rated the best-dressed members of Congress... and named Senator Bernie Sanders as one of the most fashionable in the upper house.

Vance booed at Kennedy Center performance

From our US edition

You wouldn’t expect the Kennedy Center to exactly love J.D. Vance. But that doesn’t make the audience’s reaction to him showing up there on Thursday any less extraordinary. Vance went to the Kennedy Center with his wife Usha, to watch a performance by the National Symphony Orchestra, perhaps expecting a genteel evening at one of Washington’s most high-brow venues. Instead, the audience acted like a mob, booing him as he took his seat in a box. Boos for JD Vance as he enters tonight’s concert at the Kennedy Center pic.twitter.com/IWTsJUWjCR— Andrew Roth (@Andrew__Roth) March 13, 2025 The crowd’s performance is perhaps explained by the President’s recent, er, changes to how the Kennedy Center runs.

Steve Bannon blames Gavin Newsom for creating Elon Musk

From our US edition

Critics say California governor Gavin Newsom’s new podcast, This Is Gavin Newsom, is an attempt to appeal to the center ahead of a possible 2028 presidential bid. But the governor claims his goal is to begin an open dialogue with people who don’t agree with him. So who would be better to speak to than the right-wing populist nationalist, host of War Room — and intellectual godfather of the MAGA movement — Steve Bannon? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mvMP8uTgnU&ab_channel=ThisisGavinNewsom During their conversation, Newsom wanted to address Bannon’s issues with Musk. “Do I have any issues?” Bannon joked before quoting himself in calling Elon Musk “a parasitic illegal immigrant.

Musk and Rubio make up after USAID funding clash

From our US edition

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Elon Musk settled their week-long feud this morning — through their shared love of eliminating government waste. How cute! The spat began during last week’s cabinet meeting when Musk and Rubio clashed over their different approaches to cutting the US Agency for International Development. The New York Times reported that Musk called out Rubio for firing “nobody,” arguing that he was unwilling to dismiss large groups of employees. Rubio responded by saying that more than 1,500 State Department officials had retired early or accepted redundancy offers under his leadership, the Times reported.

Knives out for sassy Massie

From our US edition

Massie hysteria: CR holdout branded ‘Congress’s Keith Olbermann’ President Donald Trump and House Republicans have seemingly written off their maverick colleague Congressman Thomas Massie for any help when it comes to funding the government. The party is wrangling with Massie over his opposition to the latest continuing resolution, which would avoid a government shutdown if passed. “I’m not voting for the Continuing Resolution budget (cut-copy-paste omnibus) this week. Why would I vote to continue the waste fraud and abuse DoGE has found?” Massie explained. “It’s oppositional defiance disorder,” one veteran House Republican staffer speculated. “He is Congress’s Keith Olbermann — who was sued by Al Gore and fired by Rupert Murdoch.

Tate brothers threaten to tilt Florida governor race

From our US edition

Who could have predicted that a pair of (accused) sex-trafficking British-born brothers could cause such a stir in the Sunshine State? The brief return of manosphere influencers Tristan and Andrew Tate to Florida has become a flashpoint in state politics. Governor Ron DeSantis has directed his attorney general, close ally James Uthmeier, to investigate the brothers. DeSantis is thought to favor his wife Casey as a potential successor when he leaves office in 2026, as opposed to Congressman Byron Donalds, who served as a Trump campaign surrogate.

The State of the Union that isn’t

From our US edition

Welcome to Cockburn’s Diary, a new newsletter from The Spectator sent twice a week from the nation’s capital. Your intrepid correspondent will keep you informed about all the whispers circulating around town. Coming to your inboxes on Tuesdays and Fridays... President Donald Trump is addressing a joint session of Congress tonight — but don’t you dare call it a State of the Union; that term is reserved for speeches given in non-inauguration years. The president is expected to tout successes from the first forty-three days of his second term, while some Democrats are expected to skip it — or to protest by holding up props like egg cartons to spotlight the high cost of groceries.

Bezos dines with Trump after dicing up Opinion page

From our US edition

“We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets,” wrote billionaire Jeff Bezos in a Wednesday note to the staff of his newspaper, the Washington Post. “We’ll cover other topics too of course, but viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others.” The missive from on high sent shockwaves around the capital. David Shipley, the Post’s Opinion editor, stepped away from his role over the new directive. Libertarian magazine Reason had a field day: “If this sounds like something you might want to read, may I suggest @reason where we’ve been doing this since 1968?” wrote editor-in-chief Katherine Mangu-Ward.

Andrew and Tristan Tate touch down in Florida

From our US edition

Andrew and Tristan Tate, social-media influencers in the infamous "manosphere," returned to Florida today after two years of judicial confinement. The Tate brothers were arrested in December 2022 on charges of rape, trafficking of minors and money laundering. Although they have never been formally convicted, the brothers have been in legal limbo in Romania while the investigation is underway. They have only just received permission to visit their home country, the United States, but they are still under judicial controls, meaning they must return to Romania when summoned. Andrew and Tristan were both former professional kickboxers who began gaining notoriety by voicing controversial opinions online.

Monica Lewinsky discusses ‘power imbalances’… on Call Her Daddy

From our US edition

Monica Lewinsky, the woman at the center of the scandal that led to the impeachment of President Bill Clinton, opened up about her journey and how America has changed in its understanding of power dynamics and owning one’s sexuality on the Call Her Daddy podcast Tuesday. Lewinsky walked through how she processed the power imbalance involved with the scandal over time. When it was happening, she didn’t think about it much. “I thought it was something it wasn’t. My feelings were real,” she told host Alex Cooper. It wasn’t until later that she was fully able to digest what she was going through at the time. “I'm very clear that this was not sexual assault. And therefore, there is a level of consensuality that was there.

Sean Hannity declares ‘legacy media is dead’

From our US edition

Sean Hannity played the role of the coroner for traditional news outlets in an interview with Mediaite this morning. “That’s why legacy media is dead — they don’t know it yet, because they don’t tell the truth. They lied about the cognitive state, they lied about immigration, they lied about the economy,” he said before pulling out a list of other untruths that seemed more like an autopsy than anything else. The irony is clear: Hannity has been working for Fox News for the last twenty-nine years, so what separates him and Fox from the media that he declares dead? Well, he would say it’s the legacy media’s lies and weaponization against Trump, evidenced by the fact that the American public voted for him anyway.

Ashley St. Clair’s love child looks ‘very much’ like Elon, says source

From our US edition

“First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the baby in the baby carriage.” That old adage is so passé. Elon Musk’s paramour Ashley St. Clair prefers “first comes Twitter stalking, then comes the baby in the baby carriage, then comes the tabloid flame war and protracted legal battle.” Conservative influencer St. Clair filed suit against Musk on Friday, as first reported by User Mag, a week after she had announced that the X CEO was the father of her five-month-old child, a boy referred to in court documents as “R.”  An eyewitness who has seen the baby tells Cockburn that he looks “very much like” his father — a trait the boy shares with his many half-siblings. Strong genes! St.
