Shots in the dark: Fatal Love, by Louisa Treger, reviewed

Ruth Ellis was, as everyone knows, the last woman in Britain to be hanged – her case a catalyst for the abolition of the death penalty. But is the story we are all so familiar with the whole one? Louisa Treger, a seasoned teller of tales of extraordinary women, brings Ellis to life in a new novel. A Fatal Love presents us with a remarkable woman who committed a remarkable crime. In 1955, when Ellis shot her lover David Blakely outside a pub in Hampstead, domestic violence was seen by the police as a ‘private matter’. ‘Coercive control’ had yet to be coined as a term, and was half a century from being criminalised. In this literary, dialogue-driven thriller, we learn that Ellis’s violent, alcoholic father had also sexually abused her.

The death penalty is still in decline – despite Trump’s best efforts

From our US edition

Donna Major was shot dead in 2017 by bank robber Brandon Council, who was convicted and sentenced to death. But Joe Biden – “guided,” as he said he was, “by my conscience” – commuted Council’s sentence along with 36 other men on federal death row in the twilight of his presidency. Was this pardon for Council an insult to Donna and her grieving relatives? Donald Trump thinks so. When he took office, he quickly rescinded Biden’s moratorium on federal executions and issued an executive order instructing states to seek new charges against the 37 killers Biden pardoned. South Carolina indicted Council for Donna’s murder again last year and so he could eventually be back on death row.

Held me so fast I was outbid on eBay: Clemency reviewed

Clemency stars Alfre Woodard as a prison warden on death row whose job is beginning to take its toll, and if you think it sounds like a tough watch, you’d be right. But it is also a masterwork, won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance, and doesn’t at any juncture call on the uplifting, healing power of cake — see: Love Sarah — so it has that going for it too. This film held me so fast I was outbid on eBay on a vintage sideboard I’d had my eyes on for ages It’s yet another film that you’ll have to stream digitally. (July was meant to be the month new films began opening in cinemas but at the moment it feels as though we’re waiting to see which of the major film companies will blink first and take the risk.
