From a day at the races to a night at the pub and shopping on the high street, many of Britain’s most popular pastimes are facing mounting pressure from tax and regulation. The gambling levy, VAT on alcohol and luxury goods, increased duty and regulation on tobacco and nicotine products, and rising business rates are all increasing costs for consumers and threatening the viability of businesses, venues and community hubs. This panel will examine whether government policy is striking the right balance between public policy objectives and consumer choice – and what can be done to protect jobs, investment and access to the activities people enjoy. Bringing together politicians, industry leaders and policy experts, the discussion will explore how Labour can balance public health, revenue and regulatory objectives with economic growth, consumer choice and the survival of Britain’s leisure and hospitality sectors.
