Rishi Sunak has raked in a tidy £303,000 for just two speaking engagements this month, the latest register of MPs’ interests reveals. The former PM pocketed £106,972 for delivering a talk funded by the Washington DC-based Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers, before trousering a further £197,595 from Seattle-based management consultancy Slalom Consulting LLC. The two gigs amounted to just 11 hours of graft – a whopping £459 per minute of Sunak’s time. Nice work if you can get it…
Not to be outdone, former chancellor Jeremy Hunt has been enjoying his own lucrative stint on the speaking circuit, pocketing four separate £16,000 payments for engagements with financial, legal and healthcare businesses, plus another £20,000 from the Irish Funds Industry Association.
Meanwhile, former deputy prime minister Oliver Dowden bagged a £7,251 all-expenses-paid jolly to the Madrid Grand Prix, courtesy of Abu Dhabi-based Mirablis Advisory. The lavish package included a Grand Prix ticket worth £5,711.99, accommodation costing £1,064.11 and a further £475.42 for transport and logistics. Really making the most of post-government life in the fast lane, eh?
And Labour MP Caroline Harris hasn’t been missing out on the perks either, enjoying £10,969 worth of trips to New York and Cape Town, funded by two organisations, to attend menopause-related conferences. To be fair, Harris is a long-time campaigner on the topic…
Mr S is, as ever, relieved to see Westminster’s gravy train shows no signs of slowing down.
