The mask of authority vs the mask of freedom

From our US edition

We’re coming up to the one-year anniversary of shutting down and masking up. Since then, America’s governors have found themselves cast as one of two stereotypes. There’s the overbearing, schoolmarmish blue-state governor who loves to mandate masks and the freedom-lovin’, grandma-killin’ red-state governor who doesn’t. (Of course, most people ignored the fact that Gov. Andrew Cuomo was as ruthlessly effective at culling the elderly as he was at shuttering businesses in New York). These archetypes resurfaced this week after Gov. Greg Abbott lifted his Texas’s mask mandate, declaring his state ‘100 percent open’. California governor and passionate foodie Gavin Newsom branded the move ‘reckless’.

He’s back: Trump flirts with 2024 run in first speech since leaving office

From our US edition

Donald Trump was over an hour late for his first speech since leaving the White House at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando, Florida. The former president finally emerged at 4:47 p.m., kissing the American flag as the PA system blasted Lee Greenwood’s ‘God Bless the USA’. He waited, applauding the crowd for the duration of the song before beginning his prepared remarks at 4:50 p.m. ‘Hello CPAC — do you miss me yet?’ he asked the crowd. Trump quickly laid to rest some of the stories that have swirled since his departure from office. ’We’re not starting new parties,’ Trump said. ‘We have the Republican party…that was fake news.’ He then launched into the issue everyone expected him to tackle: immigration.

The collapse of Andrew Cuomo

20 min listen

The American golden child of pandemic politicians seems to have lost his shine. Matt McDonald, the US managing editor of the Spectator, speaks to Janice Dean, a senior meteorologist at Fox News who has been investigating Cuomo, about how the crisis in New York's care homes ruined the Governor's reputation.

Congress certifies Biden’s victory after day of violence

From our US edition

The Houses of Congress finally certified President-elect Joe Biden's victory in the early hours of Thursday morning. The certification process had been disrupted by a mob of Trump supporters who stormed the US Capitol while the two houses were adjourned to debate an objection to the Arizona electoral vote. In the ensuing chaos, an unarmed young woman was shot while climbing through a broken window as lawmakers sheltered in place. The woman, an Air Force veteran and QAnon follower called Ashli Babbitt, later died of her wounds. Three other people died close to Capitol grounds after suffering 'separate medical emergencies', according to police, and 52 arrests were made.

50-50: Democrats win both Georgia Senate seats

From our US edition

Democrats Revd Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff have won the Georgia Senate runoffs, several pollsters are projecting. CBS, NBC and other major networks declared Warnock the victor in his race against Kelly Loeffler at just before 2 a.m. ET. Perdue and Loeffler's defeat swings the Senate to a 50-50 split, with incoming VP Kamala Harris to break any ties. President-elect Joe Biden therefore enters the White House in two weeks with a much greater chance of delivering on his campaign promises. Biden said the election of Warnock and Ossoff would result in the federal government sending out a third stimulus check of $2,000 when he stumped for the pair in Atlanta on Monday. Dave Wasserman of the Cook Political Report called Warnock's race at 9:40 p.m. ET.

Don’t blame 2020

From our US edition

I have a suggestion for a New Year’s resolution if you’re after one. Make 2021 the year that you stop blaming the year when something terrible happens. Laments of ‘fuck 2020’ or ‘2020, man’ have accompanied the lowlights of the last 12 months. Lose your house to wildfire? Blame 2020. Your favorite celebrity died? 2020 killed them. Confined to a 12 square-foot apartment at the behest of the state? 2020 made them do it! TIME magazine bravely declared 2020 ‘the worst year ever’ on its cover earlier this month. Charlie Brooker’s end-of-year Netflix special is called Death to 2020. People have been complaining about the year they are in since calendar time began.

Finally America is realizing that Andrew Cuomo is a putz

From our US edition

In a sane world, Andrew Cuomo would be America's least popular politician, a welcome target for a primary campaign or a robust Republican challenge in 2022. Yet the anti-Cuomo chorus has included precious few voices this year. The New York Post has been unrelenting in its criticism, as have conservatives in publications such as this one. ProPublica and the Associated Press rigorously reported out the nursing home debacle. But Cuomo's performance has been largely been lauded by liberal New Yorkers and pundits in the mainstream media. In July the New York governor was the 'politician of the moment', according to the New York Times.

Joe Biden wins the presidency

From our US edition

Joe Biden will become the 46th president of the United States. Decision Desk HQ, a non-partisan election results site, declared that Biden had won the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and therefore the presidency, at 8:50 a.m. ET on Friday morning. AP, CNN, ABC, NBC, Reuters, CBS and the New York Times called Pennsylvania for Biden at 11:30 a.m. ET Saturday morning. A win in Pennsylvania takes Biden to 273 Electoral College votes, past the threshold of 270 needed to secure the White House. The Democratic candidate then won Arizona, Georgia and Nevada, putting him at 306 electoral votes. The Associated Press and Fox News both called Arizona for Biden earlier in the week. Fox's decision is said to have incensed Trump senior advisers.

COVID-positive president won’t debate online

From our US edition

The droplets had barely settled after Wednesday’s vice presidential debate when next week’s head-to-head between Donald Trump and Joe Biden was thrown into doubt. The Commission on Presidential Debates announced a change in format this morning, switching the October 15 debate to a virtual event ‘in order to protect the health and safety of all involved’. Trump currently has COVID-19 and no one on his campaign will tell us when his last negative test was before his diagnosis. The Commission’s concern is understandable. But not so fast. Reacting to the Commission’s change during an appearance on Fox Business, the President declared he would no longer participate. ‘I’m not gonna waste my time on a personal debate.

Donald Trump tests positive for Covid-19

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for Covid-19. The President and first lady underwent testing after Hope Hicks, one of his top aides, tested positive on Wednesday. Trump has been campaigning across the country this week. He was in Cleveland, Ohio on Tuesday night for his first debate with Democratic nominee Joe Biden and was in Bemidji, Minnesota. He also appeared on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show last night, where he discussed Hicks’s diagnosis. ‘She did test positive, I just heard about this,’ he said. ‘And I just went out with a test, I’ll see — you know, ’cause we spend a lot of time — and the first lady just went out with a test also.

Antifa for Biden

From our US edition

Hey folks, it’s me, your friendly neighborhood antifa ringleader. You may recognize me from such news clips as ‘Small group of troublemakers seen smashing windows’ and ‘ANTIFA dude on fire in Portland’. That’s me in the black hoodie.I’m enjoying a bit of downtime ahead of another largely peaceful weekend (weather permitting!). Right now I’m changing flights — who knew there were flight changes in business class? — but I figured I’d take a break from my busy schedule of scheming to give you all an important message: vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on November 3.I know what you’re thinking: isn’t antifa a series of anarchist groups with little to do with center-left mainstream politics?

Is this the end of American democracy?

21 min listen

Joe Biden accepted the Democratic Party's nomination at their virtual convention last night, bringing his three-day coronation to an end with a well-received speech. Throughout this year's DNC, speakers have warned that America's political foundations are at stake in the upcoming election - Barack Obama urged voters not to let the Republicans 'take away your democracy'. Is the country on the brink, and what's the verdict on the Democratic convention? Matt McDonald, managing editor of Spectator USA, speaks to Matt Purple, senior editor at the American Conservative.

That dreary Bloomberg speech cost him $18 million

From our US edition

There’s an infamous anecdote from an old New York magazine story, in which then-New York mayor Michael Bloomberg arrived at a party, ‘gestured towards a woman in a very tight floor-length gown standing nearby and said, “Look at the ass on her.”’Presumably Mr Bloomberg exuded similar bluntness during his negotiations to speak at this year’s Democratic National Convention. When you’re the 19th richest man in the world, you can stroll into a room and say what you want. Money talks, and therefore so does Michael Bloomberg.

Is Kamala Harris a good VP pick?

18 min listen

Yesterday evening, Joe Biden announced Kamala Harris as his running mate. While the Californian senator is seen by many as a safe pick, she notably came to blows with Biden in the Democratic primaries for his history of working with segregationists. Is this a good move by the Biden campaign? Freddy Gray speaks to Matt McDonald, managing editor of the Spectator USA.

Biden picks Kamala Harris as running mate

From our US edition

In a rare win for the police, Joe Biden has selected California senator Kamala Harris to join him on the 2020 Democratic presidential ticket. Biden announced his pick with a short Twitter thread: 'I have the great honor to announce that I’ve picked @KamalaHarris — a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants — as my running mate. Back when Kamala was Attorney General, she worked closely with Beau. I watched as they took on the big banks, lifted up working people, and protected women and kids from abuse. I was proud then, and I'm proud now to have her as my partner in this campaign.' https://twitter.
