Why should British taxpayers fund students’ European Erasmus jollies?

Half a billion pounds of taxpayers’ money will be spent on rejoining the EU’s Erasmus+ student exchange programme. With libraries closing, criminals being let out of jail early and funding for maths and classics in schools slashed, it is the clearest indication yet of where this government’s priorities lie. Rejoining Erasmus+ simply means that working people will now be funding these young people’s excursions The decision to re-enter the Erasmus+ is widely touted as ‘permitting’ UK students to access study opportunities on the continent. The reality is that many university courses have always offered students the opportunity to spend some time studying abroad, whether in the EU or elsewhere.

The absurdity of funding ‘diverse’ research

Last week, the government made two major announcements on science and innovation. With backing from the Prime Minister and Chancellor, Science Secretary Peter Kyle laid out a detailed plan to ‘turbocharge AI’. The new ‘AI Opportunities Action Plan’ set out how the government will support AI to boost the economy and improve the productivity of the public sector. Given the Labour’s questionable commitment to growth, this was a rare ray of good hope.

Pro-Palestine campus protests have gone too far

The Prime Minister has summoned the vice chancellors of several universities to Downing Street to read them the riot act over pro-Palestine protests taking place on their campuses. But this meeting will need to have more impact than Rishi Sunak's ineffectual gathering of police chiefs in February over public order – which has led to far too little improvement in the situation.   Tomorrow’s meeting could not be more timely, with the campus protests in the UK now at a turning point. Last week, in a new low, the senior leadership of Goldsmiths, University of London surrendered to the lion’s share of demands by their pro-Palestine student protestors. Even the university's recognition of the gold standard IHRA definition of anti-Semitism is under threat.

The UK’s biggest teaching union has exposed its true colours

The National Education Union’s (NEU) mask slipped last month when four of the organisation’s senior figures published a new book, Lessons in Organising: What Trade Unionists Can Learn from the War on Teachers. It was endorsed by the NEU’s general secretary, Kevin Courtney, who called it ‘an excellent review of the attack on teachers and their unions, by authors well placed to point to ways to improve the fight back and resistance’.  The book confirms that the union’s priorities lie far from their members’ pay and workload, which they describe as ‘narrow issues’.
