2549: Obscurity

Doc writes: This is Columba’s last puzzle for The Spectator which we are pleased to publish now, three years after he retired from the series. One unclued light is the surname of the author of a novel whose title (two words) is hidden in the grid. Each word of this title has two synonyms among the unclued lights. Two unclued lights are surnames of characters in the novel, one of which can be divided into two words, each being defined by an unclued light; the other name is defined by an unclued light, which constitutes an instruction to solvers on how to treat the concealed title.

2378: Boundary

One unclued light, a term for a boundary of an area whose name is formed by two unclued lights, is a 19 of five items (one of which consists of two words, and one of which is hyphened) reading clockwise in the perimeter. Letters in corner squares and those adjacent to them could make CLAN GRANT END.   Across 11    Bird turning and not following man (5) 12    Camel?

2372: Spot-on

One unclued light (three words) is a phrase referring to an item whose scientific name is formed by two unclued lights. The first word of this name can be divided into three words, each of which has two synonyms among the other unclued lights.

2369: Prodigious

Each of ten clues contains a misprinted letter in the definition part. Corrections of misprints spell a word which can be read as an indicator of the unclued lights in each of four columns of the grid.   Across  1 Revolutionary avoids accepting one god (7) 6 Destroyed each bit of opium (7) 11 Priest and paramour lapsing?

2366: The square

Three items (one consisting of three words, and two consisting of four words each) read clockwise round the perimeter. Part of their source’s name is given by a light clued without definition; the rest (two words, rendering the 13 in 30) is concealed in one row and should be highlighted. Ignore an accent. Letters in corner squares and those adjacent to them could make SHORTER STUDY.

2360: Diplomatic

One unclued light is the title (two words) of a work by a person whose name is formed by two unclued lights. The work in question features a 17 27 which is 11. This item can be found in the appropriate area of the grid in 25 form and should be highlighted. Elsewhere ignore an accent.

2354: Pioneering

Two unclued lights form a three-word phrase. Clues in italics are cryptic indications of partial answers; in each case, the indicated part must do as instructed by the thematic phrase to create the full answer to be entered in the grid. Resulting entries (two of which consist of two words each) are defined by unclued lights.

2348: It’s a trap

Clues are given according to alphabetical order of their answers. Each of thirty-two clues comprises a definition part and a hidden consecutive jumble of the answer including one extra letter. When arranged in conventional clue order, the extras spell a character’s name and seven-word quotation (in ODQ). In the remaining seven clues, cryptic indications omit reference to parts of answers; these parts must be highlighted, to reveal an item situated as the quotation suggests in relation to the unclued 8, 21, 28 (two words), 30 and 37. Ignore an accent in the highlighted item.

Counterclaim

The first line of a 4 (two words) consists of 7A and the puzzle’s 3 41; the second line is 7D 12 33 37 (six words in total). 2339: Interesting

Cryptic indications in four clues are incomplete; in each case, the part not indicated is supplied by a 1D (two words). Two unclued lights and the 35 are synonyms of the first word of 1D; each of three unclued lights is defined by the second word of 1D, which is also the surname of a fictional character whose first name is the answer to a clue without a definition.

2336: Irrelevant

Each of four unclued lights is the result of an action that may be described as 7 (hyphened), a definition of which is supplied by an unclued light. One unclued light is the result of 39 (a three-word phrase confirmed in Chambers under its third word). Elsewhere, ignore an accent.

2333: Unchangeable

2327: Exhibition

Five unclued lights are titles of works by a person whose name is formed by two unclued lights. Three clues are definitions only; their answers exhibit all the unchecked letters of the titles. Two clued lights, symmetrically opposite each other, form the artist’s name treated as indicated by part of the title; these lights must be shaded as indicated by the rest of the title.   Across 1    Press covering hollow revolutionary fad?
