Powell orders media blackout for Fed staff

From our US edition

Jay Powell, the Federal Reserve Chairman, has banned any public appearances by any member of the Fed, Cockburn hears. Appearances at conferences have been canceled, all scheduled interviews have been abandoned and any comments on or off the record are outlawed. This unprecedented action is a reflection of two pressures. First, there are growing economic indicators that suggest the US is heading into a recession with the Dow plunging 800 points on Wednesday. Second, relations with the White House have reached a new low. President Trump has pinned the success of his presidency upon a strong economy and his qualifications as a businessman who understands the economy. If a recession takes hold, Trump believes his reputation will be destroyed and his chances of reelection dimmed.

El Presidente vs. El Union Presidente: AOC and Barstool founder clash online

From our US edition

Let's get ready to rumble! Two viral sensations are squaring off on the Twitter. In the blue corner, from Massachusetts Bay, Barstool Sports president and whole pizza-eating aficionado David 'Davey Pageviews' Portnoy. And in the red corner, all the way from the Bronx, it's fiery congresswoman Alexandria 'The Red Scare' Ocasio-Cortez. The spat concerns the hottest new trend in New York media besides developing a substance abuse problem and getting fired: unionizing. Nothing offers comfort to an overcaffeinated 23-year-old fresh out of a liberal arts college quite like a big 'union' laptop sticker on a battered MacBook Air. Springsteen would be proud. The latest cluster of journavists to attempt this strategy hail from sports site The Ringer, a Barstool competitor.

Please don’t attend this ‘Storm The Clinton Estates’ event

From our US edition

The internet is making us all madder. A Facebook event created last month encouraging people to 'Storm Area 51, They Can't Stop All of Us' has accrued over two million attendees. Now, following the deeply convenient suicide of Jeffrey Epstein Saturday, a successor is hot on its tails. A newly-formed page is inviting internet crazies to 'Storm The Clinton Estates’ with the motivational message: ‘They Cant Suicide All Of Us' [sic]. The date is set for the same weekend as the Area 51 storming (so don't double-book). The joke event alludes to a conspiracy theory popular in the MAGAsphere: that Bill and Hillary Clinton are somehow responsible for the deaths of various people who have been in their circle at some point.

The NYT’s pound-foolish Brexit coverage

From our US edition

It seems The New York Times has decided to continue its bizarre crusade against Britain, which culminated in last year’s outlandish claim that the nation lives on a diet of mutton and oatmeal (although, given current reports that the government is considering buying up Welsh lamb in the event of a no-deal exit, this strange claim could turn out to have been an unwitting prediction). The latest pronouncement comes from the NYT’s European economics correspondent Peter S. Goodman. He writes: ‘The British pound has long possessed a mystique that transcends its marginal role in the global economy, conjuring memories of its dominance in the imperial age.

Raheem Kassam is 53 today!

From our US edition

Residents of one of Washington, DC’s smartest co-op buildings dove for cover early this morning at what they thought was machine-gun fire — only to discover it was the popping of champagne corks from the penthouse. Yes, Raheem ‘The Randy Dandy’ Kassam, the Bannon-bantering, Farage-friendly Brit currently wasting his talents as editor of Human Events, staggers into his 54th year today. https://www.instagram.com/p/BsZuDWWA2Hp/ Kassam was born in London in 1966, and attended Cambridge University’s highly prestigulous Wikipedia College. He is related to Enoch Powell on his mother’s side, and to Sitting Bull on his father’s. Mentored by Nigel Farage from childhood, he published a slim volume of erotic verse at the precocious age of 46.

Hey Samantha Bee, why don’t you drop out of your show?

From our US edition

In these erratic times, political comedy is hard, OK? It's tough to dream up jokes more ridiculous than the reality of the reign of Trump: no wonder many of the writers are struggling. But is that cause enough to be cruel? Comedienne Samantha Bee directly addresses author and presidential candidate Marianne Williamson in a promo for her TBS show Full Frontal, and invites her to be a guest...if Williamson will drop out. https://twitter.com/FullFrontalSamB/status/1153328212509962241 'Hi Marianne Williamson, it's me, Sam Bee! I am so loving your vibe, so I wanted to invite you over to my show for a very chill, very serious campaign dropout party,' the host says. 'We can have tea, throat lozenges, agave, and whatever else you use to make your voice sound so angelic.

WATCH: Andrew Yang’s Bottle Cap Challenge

From our US edition

Andrew Yang is leaning into his brand as the most social media-friendly candidate...this time by participating in the Bottle Cap Challenge. https://twitter.com/andrewyang/status/1146473590226690048?s=21 In an 11-second slow-motion clip, the UBI proponent perfectly spins the cap off a water bottle with a barefoot roundhouse kick...and only minor spillage. His spelling of 'challenge', however, leaves much to be desired. He follows celebrities such as Jason Statham and Conor McGregor in executing the feat. https://twitter.com/barstoolsports/status/1145737184802213894 https://twitter.

The New Republic’s useful idiot tour

From our US edition

'To live in Havana', Graham Greene once wrote, 'was to live in a factory that turned out human beauty on a conveyor belt.' To work as Cockburn does, as an underfed Grub Street hack, is to work in an industry that turns out pointless emails on a conveyor belt. Every now and then though a real diamond rolls out of the coal chute. On Friday The New Republic invited its readers on a Caribbean jaunt – to Raúl Castro’s Cuba. Under the heading 'Discover Cuba and Support the Cuban People' the email read: 'While Trump petulantly restricts travel to Cuba, The New Republic invites you to discover the culture, society and politics of the island, and most of all bolster the people of Cuba when they need it most.

Ten demands Cockburn has if he is to take the Immigration Czar role

From our US edition

Someone really doesn’t want Kris Kobach to work in the White House. The former Kansas Secretary of State, who lost a gubernatorial race in November, was in talks about joining the administration as its ‘Immigration Czar’. But, in what appears to be an attempted kneecapping, the New York Times revealed a list of 10 demands he was making were he to take the position. Three people ‘familiar’ with Kobach’s commandments confirmed them to Maggie Haberman and Annie Karni.

NeverTrumpers assemble!

From our US edition

Alexander Nazaryan, the national correspondent at Yahoo! News, has a new book out – The Best People, pillorying the Trump administration’s staffing. And guess what? The NeverTrumper set is throwing a book party for him in New York in June, Cockburn has learned. The shindig will be held at the home of the new it girl of the Never Trump clique: Molly Jong-Fast, the daughter of northeastern blue-bloods Erica Jong and Jonathan Fast. MJF is known most for her libertine parents, her partial-renunciation of their antics and a weirdly massive Twitter following. She’s now contributing editor of The Bulwark, the Studio 54 of out-of-power, baby boomer conservatives.

SCOOP: Kamala Harris’s jerk chicken recipe

From our US edition

Cockburn couldn’t get home for Mother’s Day because he was on the campaign trail in Los Angeles, covering Kamala Harris. Harris’s chances of being America’s first Matriarch-in-Chief may be slimmer than Beto O’Rourke’s waistline, but she’s always been a mother to Cockburn. She invited him home, to join her and her husband Douglas ‘Doug’ Emhoff for a quiet Mother’s Day dinner — just them, Cockburn, their children, her campaign team, and a photographer.‘Kamala, this is delicious,’ Cockburn said, masticating furiously over her jerk chicken as the juice ran down his chin. ‘You must give me the recipe.

The mighty cucks: why do Trump loyalists want other men to make love to their wives?

From our US edition

Remember when the GOP used to pride itself on being the party of family values? Well, they still do, at least on their official platform: ‘When American families flourish, so too does our country. And every honest American knows that a strong, traditional marriage lies at the heart of each great family.’ But it’s hard to present yourself as the party of marriage and familial stability when the Republican president and so many of his entourage have had such complicated love lives. And it gets even harder when several figures in the Trump orbit have had a penchant for having other men make love to their wives, while they watch. This is a practice well-established among in seedier worlds than Spectator USA readers inhabit.

Calling TIME: has Pete Buttigieg received the magazine’s kiss of death?

From our US edition

‘First Family’, declares the cover of this week’s TIME, as Mayor Pete Buttigieg and his husband Chasten gaze at the camera, dressed in blue jeans, brown belts and tucked-in button-downs. TIME has only been going since 1923 – a full 95 years younger than The Spectator – but in that time, it’s sought to position itself as something of a political Nostradamus. Hey, if you’ve got to fill the void between the TIME 100 and Person of the Year somehow, why not wildly guess who the next president will be? But how often do those tipped by the magazine rise to glory? Cockburn peered through the archives to discover...not frequently at all. Hillary Clinton has featured on several TIME covers in the past 30 years...

Has Saturday Night Live finally found its feet in the Trump era?

From our US edition

The trouble with Trumpworld is it’s so often beyond parody. How could a comedian ratchet up the president ordering Big Macs for a visiting championship football team to make the moment funnier than it already is? It’s a problem which has plunged late-night comedy writing into an identity crisis, one that has blighted America’s flagship sketch show Saturday Night Live. The Trump era has seen SNL bag Emmys and reach record audiences. But it’s achieved this through polarization: hitting the same tired Trump tropes each week and playing to their coastal-elite base. Its viewers have noticed: 39 percent of them surveyed by The Hollywood Reporter said the show had become too political.

Trump vs tech

From our US edition

Remember when Donald Trump’s administration courted the likes of Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk? What about when the American right was still enamored with Big Tech? That seems a long time ago now. On Friday President Donald Trump tweeted: ‘I am continuing to monitor the censorship of AMERICAN CITIZENS on social media platforms. This is the United States of America — and we have what’s known as FREEDOM OF SPEECH! We are monitoring and watching, closely!!’ https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1124447302544965634?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1124447302544965634 Conservatives increasingly accept that Big Tech is a problem, something that stifles creativity and ideas. But will anyone in power ever do anything about it? When in the course of Human Events

From our US edition

The eccentric debut of Raheem Kassam and financier-attorney Will Chamberlain’s new Human Events is here. Ronald Reagan’s favorite magazine is now Raheem’s roundhouse. So how does it look? Not the worst. Eager to solidify the bridge between the Trumpzine of today and the conservative periodical of old, the site is highlighting a forty-something Trump shaking hands with the Gipper. ‘This is no time for “peacetime” Republicans,’ say the editors, dissolving any pretense of partisan non-affiliation. ‘This is a time for brawlers. And we are here to brawl.’ On tap for week one: Donald Trump Jr., Chamberlain’s legal analysis of the Mueller exoneration, the popular populist Italian writer Alessandra Bocchi and Conservative Inc. grandee Dennis Prager, among others.

Elizabeth Warren, Mother of Dragons

From our US edition

In the 2020 primary, you win or you die. That’s the subtext of a new essay in The Cut by Democratic presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren, entitled ‘The World Needs Fewer Cersei Lannisters.’ Liz has had a few headline-grabbing moments over the last few days. She issued a renewed call for Trump’s impeachment following the release of the redacted Mueller report. Now she’s piggy-backing off the hype around the biggest show in the world, writing episode reviews for New York magazine’s women’s site. Cockburn supposes they have to plug the holes left by those layoffs somehow. – Game of Thrones spoilers below – So who is Sen. Warren’s favorite character on the show?

Donald Trump’s Notre-Dame fire solution would ‘destroy’ the building, says French fireman

From our US edition

Times of crisis call for great leadership. Tragedy struck today in Paris when the 856-year-old Notre-Dame Cathedral caught fire. As Cockburn writes, the spire has just fallen. The premiers of France’s allies have been quick to offer words of condolence. ‘My thoughts are with the people of France tonight and with the emergency services who are fighting the terrible blaze at Notre-Dame cathedral,’ tweeted British Prime Minister Theresa May. ‘Shocking pictures from Paris. A landmark, World Heritage site and one of the most beautiful buildings in French history, Notre-Dame is on fire. We hope no one is hurt. Our thoughts are in Paris,’ wrote Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz.

A bizarre exhibition of Trump family fan art

From our US edition

The art world has seen many iconic depictions of America’s first families. One can see a marvelous gallery on the website of the White House Historical Association, showing portraits of every president’s wife: Jackie Kennedy gets the most glamorous portrayal to date. At present, though, the collection is incomplete: the Association does not yet feature Melania Trump, wife of the Donald. As an established connoisseur of art, Cockburn thought he might do them a favor by compiling the finest images of Trump family members the internet had to offer. Any of them would look delightful hanging in the corridors of the West Wing. The First Lady During her husband’s first term, Melania has donned a number of iconic outfits, some of which inspired our artists.

Turning Point USA plug anti-Semitic conspiracy theory on Twitter

From our US edition

‘Patriots in Action!’, Turning Point USA tweeted on Thursday, above a picture of their seven-strong student group at Fresno State University in California. The patriots are acting because last week a Fresno State professor named Daniel Cady interrupted their pro-Second Amendment campus protest by calling them ‘so, so pathetic’. ‘GOOGLE “Kalergi Plan”’ are the words on the giant beach ball held by one of Charlie Kirk’s magnificent seven, Nick Sciaroni. Kirk and TPUSA luminary Candace Owens are perhaps too busy palling around with the president to police their members’ behavior, but they might not want to associate their movement with the ‘Kalergi Plan’.
