Junior doctors are now on strike over their new contract, with recriminations between the two sides continuing as the picket lines fill up. It is clear that there has been a fundamental breakdown of trust between the BMA and Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, to the extent that both sides seem to be talking about completely different contracts. Many Tories think the BMA is going too far and is not serving the cause of its members well by provoking the public with cancelled operations. It is striking that Sarah Wollaston, who has criticised the government’s approach to the matter, is now attacking doctors’ decision to strike as counterproductive, too.

Today marked James Naughtie's last day in the presenting chair on Today after 21 years. To honour his time as a presenter on the programme, John Humphrys played some of his highlights from over the years, before asking Naughtie to recall the parts of his job that he did not enjoy. The Scottish presenter responded by referring to his now infamous Jeremy Hunt gaffe in 2010, which saw Naughtie's introduction to an interview with the then Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt go disastrously wrong when he mispronounced his name. That 98 per cent of junior doctors have voted in favour of strike action over their new contract shows the extent of the stand-off between the medical profession and Jeremy Hunt. It is not possible that all the members of the BMA who turned out to vote (76 per cent) are raving left-wingers. Most of them weren’t particularly politicised before this dispute. The question that a number of Tory MPs and ministers are asking is whether a generation of people who, given their education and income bracket, fall quite naturally into the group normally pretty likely to vote Tory are now never going to do so because of the bad blood between the medics and the government on this matter.

At this year's Tory conference Jeremy Hunt defended the government's tax credit cuts, claiming they would make the British people work as hard as the Chinese. While Hunt has since claimed that his comments were misinterpreted, tonight Labour's Helen Goodman hit out at the Health Secretary for the comments. She says if things are so great in China then why did Hunt's wife Lucia -- who is from Xi'an, China -- move to Britain: Given that the personal dig hardly fits in with Jeremy Corbyn's promise of 'a new kind of politics', Labour supporters have been quick to call on Goodman to apologise. Speaking on Westminster Hour this evening, Lady Basildon -- the Labour peer -- said Goodman should say sorry.

'That sounded so much better in my head,' said Rachel from Friends in Series 2. I suspect Jeremy Hunt is now thinking the same. He meant to say that British workers need to improve their productivity, and be weaned off work subsidies. But instead, it came out like: 'We have to proceed with these tax credit changes because they are a very important cultural signal. My wife is Chinese, and if we want this to be one of the most successful countries in the world in 20, 30, 40 years' time there's a pretty difficult question that we have to answer which is essentially: are we going to be a country that is prepared to work hard in the way that Asian economies are prepared to work hard, in the way that Americans are prepared to work hard.' When James Naughtie steps down from the Today programme this autumn, his Jeremy Hunt gaffe will stand out as one of his more memorable moments. The Scottish presenter accidentally introduced him by the wrong surname in 2010: 'First up after the news, we're going to be talking to Jeremy C--t.' The health secretary continues to cause problems for the staff of Radio 4. This morning, Naughtie's colleague John Humphrys also got Hunt's name wrong. Reading the news bulletin at 7am, Humphrys said the 'health secretary James Hunt' is setting out plans for NHS consultants to work at weekends. While the slip wasn't an expletive this time around, given that the BBC are currently at war with the Tories, it's probably the wrong time for presenters to get Cabinet ministers' names wrong.

When Martin Freeman endorsed Labour ahead of the election, his credentials were called into question after Steerpike reported that Freeman was a former supporter of Arthur Scargill's far-left Socialist party. So Mr S was curious to hear Burnham last night reveal his own admiration for Scargill - who formed the Socialist party because he was so angry that Labour had ‘abandoned any pretence of being a socialist party'. As the Tories raised a glass to Lynton Crosby at the election strategist's bash in Kensington, the Labour leadership hopeful was across town setting out his brand of self-titled 'aspirational socialism' over at Soho House, the £1400 private members' club.

The odd thing about the Labour leadership contest is that while it runs, two of the most different candidates, Liz Kendall and Andy Burnham, must work together in the Shadow Health team. Today they had a chance to show how well they perform in the Commons, speaking within minutes of one another at the first questions of the new Parliament. Kendall asked about access to GPs, asking Jeremy Hunt why he had failed to meet his promises in this area. Her delivery was not particularly confident: she read her question and was nowhere near as forceful as Burnham, who came later. Hunt congratulated the Shadow Health Minister on her return to the frontbench, adding that ‘I know she hopes it will only be for a brief time’.

Today’s health election debate on the BBC just now was one of the feistiest we have seen in this campaign. Andy Burnham, Jeremy Hunt and Norman Lamb clashed repeatedly — and passionately — over Mid Staffs and the appropriate role for the private sector in the NHS. Burnham was on hectoring form throughout the debate. But he struggled so badly to answer Andrew Neil’s questions about Mid Staffs that one was left feeling he’ll never be able to win a Labour leadership contest until he has a proper answer to these questions.
