Watch: Labour MP attacks Starmer

Credit: Parliament

It’s all kicking off in the Commons tonight. The smash-and-grab assault on Caracas continues to dominate conversations in Westminster, with left-wingers furious at the Starmer government’s silence. And tonight, one of the Socialist Campaign Group’s most stalwart members, has decided to voice his irritation loudly and proudly. In response to the Foreign Secretary’s statement on Venezuela, Labour MP Richard Burgon told the House that his own leader was taking a ‘cowardly, craven approach’ by failing to condemn Donald Trump’s ‘disgusting attack on Venezuela’:

It was the Prime Minister that decided to disregard the UN Charter when it came to Trump’s bombing, killing and kidnapping of a head of state. I think it speaks volumes that the Prime Minister has chosen not to come to this House to explain his decision. The reality is this: if it were Putin doing this the Prime Minister would not be saying “It’s up to the Russians to decide whether or not this is legal”. Yet this is exactly what the Prime Minister has said in relation to Trump’s disgusting attack on Venezuela. Isn’t the reality that the Prime Minister has decided to ditch international law and sidestep the UN Charter in order to appease Donald Trump? And doesn’t this cowardly, craven approach drag this country’s reputation through the dirt?

Yvette Cooper responded with a curt put down: ‘I do find it hard to not remember his support and welcoming for the Maduro regime: a regime which is currently being investigated for crimes against humanity.’ Score draw on this one…
