Progressives no longer care about women

When did progressives become so staggeringly cavalier about the safety of women? Just look at the big stories of “silly season”. Thousands of blokes from God knows where have landed on our shores and working-class women and girls are told to put up and shut up. There was talk of letting rapists, including the diabolical “grooming gangs”, out of jail early. And now activists are barking at women to let fellas into their WCs on pain of being branded a bigot.

The gender ideologues of the messed-up left are raging

You heard them, ladies. Welcome into your community those 800 gruff men from countries where women are treated like cattle. Throw open your intimate spaces – your loos, your changing rooms, your rape shelters – to any man who says he’s a woman. And stop whingeing about the early freeing of violent dudes from the clink. Honestly, lefty activism right now is basically: “Shut up, bitches.” Oh, and: “GAZA!”

We are witnessing the ritual sacrifice of female safety at the altar of progressive virtue. The left in their gentrified enclaves are utterly unbothered that 2,000 foreigners – mostly fighting-age men – have come here illegally since Andy Burnham became PM. And woe betide the “gammon” mum who dares to demur from this blokeish storming of our borders. Women in Epping and elsewhere have been tarred as fascists for not wanting men from afar bussed into their local hotels.

We’ve also had the mad issue of early prisoner releases to free up jail space. Burnham, finally, has watered it down: rapists and groomers won’t be included in this mass dumping of convicts into the community. Okay. That’s good. But it doesn’t change the fact that we have civil servants who thought it was a good plan to free the monstrous “groomers” of vulnerable girls. The disregard for the dignity and safety of those women from the other side of the tracks – it’s mindblowing.

And now we have the smug set blubbing over this week’s enforcement of the sex rule in public places. A code drawn up by the Equality and Human Rights Commission has reminded public institutions of something human beings have known since we came down from trees: that men are men and women and women, and we should use facilities that accord with our sex, not with our feelings. So if you have a penis, or ever had one, it’s the men’s for you.

The gender ideologues of the messed-up left are raging. “It’s unworkable”, they say. Yeah, because biological males, in a flagrant violation of social decorum and women’s rights, keep insisting on using the female facilities, and you keep encouraging them. I was once on the left. I’m critical of the left now. But even I could never have envisioned them one day saying: “What do we want? The right of men to poop in the ladies’! When do we want it? Now!”

You know the most infuriating thing? Much of this dignity trouncing dolled up as activism is coming from silver-spoon leftists who spent their university years ensconced in the Safe Space. In another life I was both victim and tormentor of these Stepford Students. I remember visiting campuses and being surrounded by young women who sounded like Princess Anne telling me my words made them feel “unsafe”.

These snowflakes would be in their thirties now. They no doubt swell the ranks of the activist class, the leftish media and even the civil service. I bet they all faithfully chant that bourgeois mantra “Trans women are women” and wring their untoiled hands over the “racism” of the Pink Ladies who protest against migrant hotels. They spent years forcefielding their precious self-esteem from lads’ mags and sexist pop songs yet now cry “Bigot!” at women who don’t want literal men – unknown, unvetted men – moving in next door.

It seems the psychic safety of well-to-do women is prized more highly than the physical safety of working-class women. Their right to be guarded against hurty words counts for more than your right to be shielded from strangers. Even the feelings of certain fellas trump the security of the ladies of left-behind Britain: to the gender-drunk activist set, misgendering a man who identifies as a woman is a greater sin than that man strolling around with his balls out in the women’s changing room.

It’s galling: the alumni of the Safe Space deny safety to others. The pampered classes look down their noses at women who only want actual, real security. Everywhere we are seeing the erosion of borders. The nation’s border. The border between blokes and women-only spaces. The border between convict and non-convict. Restoring these boundaries is crucial, no matter how much it irks privileged protesters.
