Ardent feminist Stella Creasy appears to have set her principles aside today to cheer on a gender-segregated Muslim march through Walthamstow. The Labour MP took to X to gush over the ‘46th Milad Al Nabi’ parade, an annual celebration of the Prophet Mohammed’s birthday. Creasy boasted: ‘Food, sweets and roses all shared by those marching with the local residents. #loveWalthamstow’.
Puzzled social media users soon asked why only men appeared to feature in the footage. Times columnist Jenni Russell questioned: ‘Where are the women, Stella? Why are they excluded? Do explain.’ Creasy, who ardently campaigned against the Garrick’s former men-only membership policy, hit back: ‘No they are not – why not come next year and see for yourself?’
In an effort to dispel any suggestion of religious misogyny, Creasy then posted a follow-up video of herself surrounded by women dressed in black robes and headscarves, some covered entirely except for their eyes. She declared: ‘These women are the future optometrists, lawyers, accountants, surgeons and leaders of our community and country. They also celebrate the Prophets Birthday at the Milad il Nabi March. Everyone is welcome so come next year and meet them to find out what this event is as they are fantastic!’ Asked if this was confirmation that the women were segregated from the rest of the march, Creasy confirmed that indeed they were.
So… at the Garrick, male-only membership was misogyny; in Walthamstow, male-only marching is multiculturalism. Creasy’s feminism clearly has a selective admissions policy.
