Gordon Brown spent much of his political career arguing passionately that Scotland should remain within the United Kingdom and that his own British birthright should be protected from Scottish nationalism. Yet apparently the same principle does not extend across the Irish Sea. Gordon Brown’s Britishness is permanent. Mine, it seems, comes with an expiry date. My British identity is no more provisional than Gordon Brown’s Scottish identity The former prime minister was asked again about Scottish independence in an interview with the Guardian’s Saturday magazine, published on 29 August. Brown was unequivocal.

Arlene Foster is the former first minister of Northern Ireland and was leader of the Democratic Unionist Party from 2015 to 2021. She was the first woman to hold either position. Arlene moved into politics after joining the Ulster Unionist Party as a Law student at Queen’s University Belfast. Having grown up in conflict during the Troubles, she remembers an attempted murder of her father by the IRA. During her long career in politics, Arlene has consistently fought for the Union between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. She resigned from her positions in politics to become a broadcaster and campaigner where she host a weekly show on GB News.

I’ve always maintained I go to Fermanagh for sanity, and after the past few months, I need a return to sanity more than ever. Fermanagh is by far the least populated of Northern Ireland’s six counties and it’s beautiful. I grew up here in the countryside, playing in fields, and now live near Brookebrough in the east of the county. From the sanctuary of Fermanagh I think about the fact that the new DUP leader and his team will now have to negotiate with Sinn Fein to get the first minister nominated again. Once I resigned, it meant that the deputy first minister was also out: for both ministers to be appointed there has to be agreement between the parties. This is not an easy process, as you might imagine.
