Is South Korea bracing for a third Trump-Kim summit?

Donald Trump’s meeting with President Xi was the standout moment of this month’s Asia-Pacific leaders’ summit in South Korea. Yet almost as much attention focused on the rumors that Trump’s gaze had turned once again to North Korea. Addressing suggestions he would meet Kim, the President told reporters, "I’d be open 100 percent. I get along very well with Kim Jong-un." A meeting never materialized, but speculation – and tension – has only grown since.  Days after Trump’s departure, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth arrived as part of his own tour of Asia. In Seoul, he became the first defence secretary in nearly eight years to visit Panmunjeom, the border village within the Joint Security Area (JSA) of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

Will the new ‘communist’ leader of South Korea abandon the US for China?

American divisions over politics look positively civil compared to the polarization that has gripped South Korea over the last few years. During the 2022 elections, Yoon Suk-yeol of the conservative People Power party (PPP) narrowly won the presidency over his liberal opponent Lee Jae-myung from the Democratic Party by a razor thin 0.73 percent. But Yoon hastened the demise of his own presidency when on December 3, 2024, he made the poor decision to declare martial law over baseless accusations that the National Assembly’s progressive opposition were collaborating with North Korea. Martial law lasted for only a few hours after both parties unanimously voted to lift the decree.

Could Biden be forced to debate RFK Jr.?

A couple of years ago, you’d probably know Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for being one of the world’s most vocal antivaxxers, the black sheep of an American political dynasty and somehow married to Cheryl Hines from Curb Your Enthusiasm. A couple of years from now... might you know him as the US’s unlikeliest president?RFK Jr. is challenging President Biden for the Democratic nomination in 2024. The DNC has declared that it won’t host primary debates — yet a Fox News poll this week showed Kennedy with 19 percent to Biden’s 62 percent. If the Facebook algorithm can help RFK inch that support up ten points or so, could the Democrats be forced to platform him?And who knows: Kennedy’s candidacy could prove to be a real shot in the arm for the Democratic grassroots.
