Has the AI jobs bloodbath finally arrived?

There has been much wallowing over news that Amazon and UPS have each just cut 14,000 jobs. Some Amazon employees report of being fired with all the heartlessness you might expect in a world where tech has taken over: by automated email. Maybe it was even AI which handpicked them to be de-emphasized, to use that dreaded 1990s expression. This, then, seems to be the future: where an elite of AI entrepreneurs grow rich while the rest of us slop off into idleness and unemployment. So much for those who have been gleefully predicting the implosion of the AI boom. Nvidia has just been revealed to be the world’s first $5 trillion company, with a market capitalization greater than the whole of Germany.

Was 2023 the year of the labor union?

It is only fitting that the low point of the American labor movement occurred in 2009, the Year of the Rat. The Great Recession may have started with Wall Street speculation in the housing market, but your average American had most likely never heard of Henry Lehman or his siblings until the day Dick Fuld drove the 150-year-old bank bearing their name into the ditch. But General Motors, Chrysler? Cars, even more than Hollywood, jazz and the semi-automatic rifle, are the quintessential American business. How could those get driven into the ground? As soon as freshly evicted homeowners finished packing the remains of their subprime split-levels into the backseats of their battered Tahoes, they went looking for culprits. They settled on the United Auto Workers.

Shipping company Yellow could lose Walmart, further worsening US shipping woes

Walmart has reportedly stopped using Yellow as the shipping company stares down bankruptcy and a major strike by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Craig Fuller of FreightWaves tweeted that Walmart was one of Yellow’s largest customers, meaning their exit will cost the company dearly. The implosion of Yellow could magnify the impact of any potential IBT strike against UPS, which alone could have ground the US economy to a halt. Yellow had received a $700 million federal loan during the Covid pandemic, but has run into challenges paying it back, and the New York Times reports that the company had $1.5 billion in debt in March 2023.

Could the Teamsters’ fight with UPS shut down America?

A pugnacious union president is setting up a little-noticed showdown with United Parcel Service (UPS), in what would be the largest labor strike in American history, potentially complicating President Joe Biden’s rollout of “Bidenomics.” At issue is mainly wage increases for part-time Teamsters, who earn roughly $20 an hour; Teamsters want that increased by around 30 percent. Earlier this month, both sides made significant progress on core issues like ending forced overtime on drivers’ days off and establishing Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a holiday.  However, talks soured earlier this month and both sides are barreling towards the July 31 deadline; if no deal is reached by the end of the month, the Teamsters will fully strike.
