It’s a sad indictment of the American political process. And it is a distraction from how strong American conservatism could be. More than a dozen major Republicans are standing.

Alex Salmond and Donald Trump

Since Donald Trump and the Birthers are everywhere today, I wonder if Alex Salmond winces at the memory of being described by Trump as "an amazing man"? I hope so. For Salmond's role in the saga of Trump's plans to build a golf course and, just as importantly, hundreds of "villas" on one of the more spectacular pieces of Aberdeenshire coastline was not one of the SNP ministry's finer moments. To recap, Aberdeenshire council rejected Trump's application to build two golf courses, a hotel and his houses on the Menie Estate (pictured above). The Scottish government, as it is wont* to do, called in the application and to precisely no-one's surprise over-ruled the council and gave Trump permission to build the "greatest golf course in the world".

Trumpton-on-the-North-Sea Latest: The Donald Can Still Buy Your House

It had been expected - according to press reports admittedly - that Aberdeenshire Council would lift the threat of compulsory purchase orders being used to evict four families from their homes to pacify Donald Trump's demand for yet more land for his golf course development on the Menie Estate, near Aberdeen. Well, so much for expectations. Alas. By 57 votes to six the council rejected that proposal, claiming, according to the BBC that it would be "inappropriate to reject the use of CPOs completely without a full report." While it's good that the Council hasn't yet endorsed compulsory purchase orders, it's depressing that they remain on the table at all and one must fear that, when or if push comes to shove, the council will eventually approve them.

Does Donald Trump Need Your House?

Well, if he thinks he does you should be afraid. This has nothing to do with the absurd "Donald" being American and everything to do with the looming reality that folk will be compelled to sell their homes to accomodate his desire to own an even bigger part of Aberdeenshire. To recap: Donald Trump wants to build a couple of golf courses on the Aberdeenshire coast. He also wants to build nearly 1,000 "luxury houses" on the site. Apparently the main course is supposed to be the "Geatest Course in the World". Well, maybe. It is hard to see how the ghastly holiday village can even pretend to make such a comparable claim. But now the Trump organisation thinks they need more land. Which means they need to buy out a handful of owners who are, rather spendidly, opposed to selling to Trump.
