As old media squabbles, new media thrives

The traditional newsroom is finally coming to terms with its slow metamorphosis into a college campus, taken hostage by younger progressive activist staffers. When Sen. Tom Cotton was granted op-ed space in the New York Times last week, many of the millennial staff were triggered into issuing social media claims that lives were being put in danger, namely those of their African American colleagues. The fallout has been swift and will have a chilling effect on speech and commentary in major newspapers for years to come. James Bennet, the Times’s editorial director, resigned from his position after defending the paper’s decision to run the column.

Mario Lopez shouldn’t apologize for telling the truth about trans kids

Apparently, there are still a few people left who did not get the memo about wrongthink. After Twitter dredged up an interview Mario Lopez did with conservative personality Candace Owens in June, he was promptly schooled: it is 2019, after all, and no longer acceptable to ask questions about transgender doctrine. In response to Owens’s comments about the ‘weird trend’ wherein celebrities believe their kids have the ‘mental authority’ to ‘pick their gender’, Lopez agreed, saying he was ‘blown away, too.’ The actor and host of Extra added that he thought it was ‘dangerous as a parent’ to accept a three-year-old’s announcement that they are the opposite sex as concrete fact.

When did Congressional testimony become performance art?

Watching parts of the Watergate hearings again recently, I was struck by just how dry they are as a spectacle. This momentous national occasion, with all its historic consequences, appeared to be conducted with all the torpor of a group of chameleons sunbathing on a tree branch. If you were to compare Alexander P. Butterfield’s restrained, emotionally strangled testimony with Jon Stewart’s showboating appearance before a House Judiciary Committee yesterday, you would think an enormous change in human nature had occurred in the decades between then and now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeQXopJ5U-Q Stewart was attending a hearing for a bill that would protect the health benefits of 9/11 first responders.

Turning Point USA plug anti-Semitic conspiracy theory on Twitter

‘Patriots in Action!’, Turning Point USA tweeted on Thursday, above a picture of their seven-strong student group at Fresno State University in California. The patriots are acting because last week a Fresno State professor named Daniel Cady interrupted their pro-Second Amendment campus protest by calling them ‘so, so pathetic’. ‘GOOGLE “Kalergi Plan”’ are the words on the giant beach ball held by one of Charlie Kirk’s magnificent seven, Nick Sciaroni. Kirk and TPUSA luminary Candace Owens are perhaps too busy palling around with the president to police their members’ behavior, but they might not want to associate their movement with the ‘Kalergi Plan’.

CPAC 2019 is going to be a blast

Candace Owens and the rise of the know-nothing public intellectual

Adolf Hitler ruined nationalism for everyone, says Candace Owens, which is something of a niche complaint. (She had nothing to say about the toothbrush mustache which, in the 1920s, was a sign of moral seriousness.) Owens is African-American, and a rising star in Trump circles in the way that if you are African-American, or gay, and a Trump supporter, you become a rising star, because the pool of talent is thin and the airwaves – I mean Twitter and Instagram - are fat. ‘Whenever we say “nationalism,”’ Owens said, like a woman reciting a wonky Wikipedia page from memory, ‘the first thing people think about, at least in America, is Hitler.

Turning Point USA is a campus activist group for old people

Exciting times at Turning Point USA, the Tea Party college activism group founded by Charlie Kirk (who never attended college). It emerged today that everyone’s favorite plagiarist Benny Johnson will be joining from the Daily Caller as Chief Creative Officer. Cockburn congratulates the (presumed) author of ‘Penis Pump Claims Becoming A Stiff Problem For Federal Government’, and wishes him well with his endeavors to draw in more college kids to the movement. Judging by how their Facebook advertising campaigns are going, he’ll have his work cut out for him. As a keen-eyed left-wing activist noticed on Twitter, despite TPUSA’s target audience being college students between the ages of 18-23, it’s that demographic that are seeing the least of their boosted posts.

Why are Democrats blue?

It is a curious fact that while English conservatives identify with the colour blue and English lefties with the colour red, the opposite is the case in America. I have struggled to recollect why the Democrats chose blue in 2000 but rather suspect it had something to do what Dr Christine Blasey Ford would call the ‘prefrontal cortex’. Many human decisions are taken on emotional grounds and emotion, as we are taught, is often governed by childhood memory.

Kanye West is the gift that keeps giving

Kanye West is perfect. Every time I think he can’t go up in my estimation, he does something more magical. Last night, having established himself as the most important political figure in the free world, he decided the time had come to find new worlds to conquer. ‘I am distancing myself from politics and completely focusing on being creative !!!’ he tweeted, out of the blue. https://twitter.com/kanyewest/status/1057382916760707072 And this not three weeks from the Oval Office audience he gave President Donald Trump, an occasion at which he, brilliantly, chose to communicate only through free association – oscillating at a frequency barely within the realms of human comprehension.
