2024 Republican National Convention

RIP Hulk Hogan, the omnipresent Eighties icon

Hulk Hogan, who died today at 71, will be sorely missed. But in July 1996, arguably the most famous and beloved pro wrestler of all time was standing in a ring as fans booed and threw trash at him. He had just turned into a bad guy for the first time ever.  This was the second time Hogan would take professional wrestling to unprecedented heights.  Nearly 30 years ago, Hogan formed the villainous “New World Order” (NWO) for Ted Turner’s World Championship Wrestling (WCW). Because of Hogan’s group, WCW would beat the former top wrestling company, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) for 83 straight weeks in the TV ratings.  No other company had ever beaten WWE in the ratings.

Melania speaks!

Former first lady Melania Trump plans on releasing her first memoir this fall, entitled Melania. The book is slated to tell “a powerful and inspiring story of a woman who has carved her own path, overcome adversity and defined personal excellence,” according to her office. The book will be published by Skyhorse Publishing and will have two versions, a “Collector’s Edition” signed by the former first lady and a “Memoir Edition.” The fifty-four-year-old has kept relatively quiet about her time in the White House and life as a whole, and opted not to speak at the RNC, marking a departure from tradition for candidates’ wives. She did appear onstage with her husband at the end of his remarks and watched other speakers from the dais on the final day.

Time for Republicans to run as if they could lose

It’s Joever. The president of the United States has announced that he is out of the race and thrown his support behind “Coconut Tree” Kamala Harris. On its face, this may sound like good news for overly confident Republican strategists. Harris may not be fossilized, but she still shares responsibility for her administration’s failures. Polls show that she is roughly as popular as Biden. Still, in electoral politics, overconfidence is a vice: Republicans should start talking and acting as if they can lose.  One of Trump’s greatest strengths is his ability to depict wins. “We’re gonna win so much that you are gonna get tired of winning,” he loves to tell his audience.

Biden has ended his reelection bid. What comes next?

President Joe Biden finally announced Sunday that he would not seek reelection weeks after a disastrous debate performance against former president Donald Trump that laid bare Biden’s physical and mental decline. As most things in life do, Biden’s exit from the presidential race happened slowly and then all at once. A few Democratic pundits and relatively small-time elected officials expressed grave concerns about Biden’s ability to carry on immediately following the debate, but it took weeks longer for top Biden allies — such as former speaker Nancy Pelosi, the Obamas and the Clintons — to privately reason with and publicly leak damaging information about their ol’ buddy Joe. This outcome was inevitable. Post-debate, the genie could not be put back in the bottle.

Trump returns to the campaign trail in Michigan with VP pick Vance

Donald Trump and his freshly announced running mate, Senator J.D. Vance, held their first rally together Saturday in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Following his acceptance speech earlier this week at the RNC convention in Milwaukee, the rally marked Trump’s first time back on the campaign trail since surviving an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. After being introduced by Vance, an energetic Trump appeared on stage without the white ear bandage he wore at his last public appearance. This one was replaced with a smaller, less conspicuous covering. Early in his speech, the Republican candidate distanced himself further from the “severe right” Project 2025, a policy and staffing operation led by the Heritage Foundation.

Delayed RNC attendees put up in Chicago migrant hotel

Milwaukee, Wisconsin A global IT meltdown seemingly caused by a glitch in the CrowdStrike platform caused members of Congress, members of the media and Republican Party operatives of all ranks to suffer together as they scrambled to get to their home bases across America after the conclusion of the RNC. Most were stuck either in Milwaukee or in one of Chicago’s bigger airports. The “RNC 2.0 is happening in the Chicago airport currently,” one attendee who made it out of Milwaukee quipped.  In order to make up for the mass delays and cancellations, airlines attempted to be generous, but many offerings ended up reinforcing several of the messages that came from the RNC: that America’s borders are wide open and that the cost of food remains out of control.

A new subdued Trump at the RNC

Milwaukee, Wisconsin “The challenge for Trump,” says The Spectator editorial from this month’s magazine “is to show Americans a steady hand and a normal face.” The normal face the Republican National Convention opted for was that of wrestling legend Hulk Hogan, who took to the stage waving a huge American flag, began his remarks by yelling, "Well let me tell you something brother" and later removed his jacket so he could tear his vest in half to reveal a red "Trump-Vance" tank top underneath. "Let Trumpomania run wild!" he screamed. The Fiserv Forum was exuberant. High up in the stands, Russell Brand was sat a few rows behind me, for some reason. Is this America's new normal? https://twitter.com/jordanuhl/status/1814111040076153156?

A more reflective Trump will win in November

Dr. Johnson once remarked that the prospect of hanging in a fortnight concentrates the mind. So, apparently, does being shot.    At least, that’s part of what I took away from Donald Trump’s long and sober acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention last night.   Many commentators have observed that there was a kinder, gentler Trump on view at the convention last night. Perhaps.   Certainly, the detailed account he gave of his experience being shot last week at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, was edged with a solemness and humility that have not been prominent parts of Trump’s rhetorical armory. I hope readers will appreciate that little exercise in litotes.

Trump calls for unity in somber RNC speech

Milwaukee, Wisconsin President Donald Trump arrived at Thursday night’s convention to accept the Republican Party’s nomination for president but, more importantly, to inspire a nation with hope. The president started his much anticipated speech by retelling the events of the attempt on his life at Saturday’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. “I’ll tell you what happened, and you’ll never hear it from me a second time, because it’s too painful to tell,” Trump told the crowd. As he walked through the events that day, attendees cried and laughed with the president — who retained his sense of humor after the senseless attack. He praised the crowd in Pennsylvania for their courage and calm amid the bullets, saying their refusal to stampede “saved many lives.

Elon Musk boards the Trump train out of California

Elon Musk is parting from his home state, publicly endorsing Trump minutes after the former president was almost assassinated at his rally in Pennsylvania. Musk also announced he will be donating $45 million to a pro-Trump political action committee and that he will be moving the headquarters of SpaceX and X from California to Austin, Texas.  He is among many other Silicon Valley billionaires who are announcing their support for Trump following the attack, including Bill Ackman, the Pershing Square Capital Management CEO. Musk cited California governor Gavin Newsom’s new law that bars school districts from requiring staff to notify parents of their child’s gender identification change as the “final straw,” as the law was “attacking both families and companies.

MSNBC’s hell week: Lord of the Rings racism, Covid and no Joe

It’s been a rough few days over at MSNBC. Since the attempted assassination on Donald Trump over the weekend, the network seems to be the one unable to regain its footing. From J-13 truthers to The Lord of the Rings conspiracies, here’s Cockburn’s rundown of everything that's gone wrong so far. Much like Joe Biden’s weekly routine, MSNBC got off to a shaky start on Monday after it pulled Morning Joe from air following the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania. Executives were worried Mika Brzezinski planned to pull out her hand-stitched Trump voodoo doll. Whatever the couple had cooked up, Joe Scarborough was not happy that they weren’t able to pull it off.

The logic of the J.D. Vance selection

The best way to understand Donald Trump’s choice of J.D. Vance for vice president is to ask how different choices would have helped with different problems. That Trump didn’t choose them tells us that Trump isn’t worried about those problems. He has different goals. If Donald Trump was deeply worried about winning swing states, he probably would have selected Glenn Youngkin. The popular Virginia governor would probably give him the most help with independents in those states. If Trump were worried about Evangelicals, he wouldn’t have passed over Doug Burgum because of his strong stance on early-term abortions.

Cockburn at the convention, days one and two

Milwaukee, Wisconsin Cockburn is currently drinking his first half-decent coffee of the Republican National Convention in the media filing center, bleary eyed after two nights of aggressive socializing. Wisconsin is supposed to be famous for its beer and cheese — but it’s overcooked burgers and watery cold brew that have been keeping your devoted correspondent functional in the sweltering Midwest heat. (If anyone has any food recommendations in Milwaukee, please, for the love of God, email them to cockburn@thespectator.com.) His first social soirée was an impromptu Monday cocktail with Liz Truss, the former British PM who was recently de-MP’d in Labour’s landslide victory.

Kanye West’s wife goes nude while ex speaks at RNC

Yeezy porn may have been put on ice, but Kanye West is still intent on bringing debauchery to the world. West’s wife Bianca Censori, whom the rapper often styles in, well, nothing, was spotted in one of her most scandalous outfits yet, evoking outrage for the couple’s X-rated stunts.   On Monday, the Australian architect and model was on her way to the Melrose Tanning Company in Los Angeles in nothing but underwear and a completely see-through top. With the amount of sun Censori must get from her frequent displays of public nudity, Cockburn is surprised she has to go to a tanning salon at all. Censori did, however, have the decency to at least cover her hair with a hat.

Enes Kanter Freedom exploring run for office

2024’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee is hoping to showcase the GOP’s present and future, with the vice presidential selection of Senator J.D. Vance indicating a push by Donald Trump to cement his legacy. While the convention center is filled with current candidates for offices of every kind, one attendee just told Cockburn that he’s looking at joining the GOP’s ranks in a cycle or two: former NBA star Enes Kanter Freedom, whose towering figure has already been dominant at the Fiserv Forum. Freedom told Cockburn that, while he currently lives in Washington, DC, he wants to run for office in the near future, while acknowledging that he’ll probably have to relocate somewhere in order to make that happen.

The political impact of the Trump assassination attempt

The conventional wisdom is that the race for the presidency fundamentally changed with the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump. That’s wrong. The failed attempt to kill Donald Trump didn’t change trends in this election; it reinforced them.   The shooting reinforced public images about four distinct issues.  Trump’s strength and determination;  Biden’s weakness, politically, physically and cognitively;  Trump’s lead in the battleground states he needs to win reelection; and  The failure of basic governmental institutions, such as the Secret Service, to do their job  The enduring image of the Saturday shooting is the photo of the former president as he leaves the stage.

Trump rushed off stage after assassination attempt at Pennsylvania rally

Former president Donald Trump was dragged off stage by Secret Service, his face bloodied, after an assassination attempt during his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, tonight. Video footage from the incident suggests multiple shots were fired. Supporters behind him ducked for cover as they rang out. “Glass fragments not a bullet hit Trump,” a source familiar told Axios's Juliegrace Brufke. https://twitter.com/nickfondacaro/status/1812252032272593009?s=46&t=KTzG0soGgiCKUdkuiUQOwA Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger told the Washington Post's Meryl Cornfield that "Trump was grazed by gunfire but is safe. An audience member was killed and the shooter is dead. Another person is in serious condition.

‘It doesn’t change our approach’: RNC chair unfazed by Democrats’ ‘melting down’

Republican National Committee chairman Michael Whatley defended changes to the GOP’s party platform, teased “surprise” speakers and shed insight into the party’s strategy to defeat President Joe Biden — or, potentially, another Democratic nominee — in a wide-ranging interview previewing next week’s convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Whatley told The Spectator that the convention, during which former president Donald Trump will officially receive the party’s nomination in the 2024 presidential race, will be about “highlighting everyday Americans.

When will Trump announce his VP pick? The three options

With the Republican National Convention just around the corner, Cockburn sees only three possible options when it comes to Donald Trump announcing his VP pick. And according to the former president in an interview with Sean Hannity Monday night, he’d “love to do it during the convention," but "my people say that’s a little complicated.” Trump is hosting a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday night. With the RNC on Monday in Milwaukee, this could be prime time for Trump to make the VP announcement. Because his “people say it’s a little complicated” to do it during the convention, this would give the party a day or so to get their ducks in a row. “You know in the old days they would announce the vice president during the convention.

The newly disciplined Trump is driving the left nuts

For years now Republicans have voiced some version of the same opinion: "If only Donald Trump could get out of his own way..." things would be going much better for them. In the DC swampland, this usually was followed with some comment about his tweets and personal feuds. Outside, if it came from older voters, it was usually expressed as "I wish he'd just put down the phone sometimes." And if it came from middle-aged supporters, it was more than once expressed to me that Trump just needs to "stop tripping on his own dick."  The attitude is ubiquitous among some portions of the president's base: they just think he'd be better off if he could focus and not give Democrats so much material.
