Just in case you were worried it had slipped off the agenda, Labour MP Samantha Niblett has confirmed that her parliamentary dildo exhibition will go ahead. Her ‘summer of sex’ campaign now has the firm backing of none other than John Lewis, alongside luxury sexual wellness company Coco de Mer. The high-street giant even hosted a launch event for Niblett’s campaign on Wednesday night. Never knowingly under-stimulated, eh? Attendees at the soiree were given luxury goodie bags containing biscuits, canned cocktails and intimate bodycare products.
At the event, Niblett confessed: ‘I was a little worried about putting my head above the parapet because actually, who wants to hear their MP talk about sex?’ But the South Derbyshire MP added that she longs ‘to be a part of the change of the culture’ in SW1.
Niblett also insisted that previously sceptical colleagues are now coming – pun very much intended – around to her campaign. The gay dating app Grindr has even promised the Labour MP an introduction to Harry Styles, who is keen to flog his own sex-toy range. It seems her Westminster crusade is gathering quite the buzz.
Today, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch spoke for much of the nation when she lambasted Niblett as a self-absorbed poseur. She wrote on X: ‘One of the improvements we’re making to our candidate selection process is screening for this tendency. Conservatives are weeding out the self-absorbed who come into politics because they couldn’t get into showbiz.
‘For these poseurs, being an MP is not about legislating to make people’s lives easier, safer and richer but a platform to campaign for their personal hobby-horses and other self-promoting activity. They waste a lot of Parliament’s time with trivia, creating unwelcome delays and distraction from their colleagues’ work and focus on serious matters.’
Niblett may be determined to bring sex toys into parliament, but Badenoch – and Mr S suspects the vast majority of Brits – clearly think Westminster already has quite enough knobs.
