The digital left has a new hate figure: Haley Stevens. She’s the Democrat who has put a bomb under the Michigan Senate race in today’s midterms by backing the Republican candidate Mike Rogers over the Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed. “Traitor,” “racist,” “Islamophobe,” “bitch” – she’s had all that, and worse, from the Be Kind mob. I have a better word for her: hero.
That’s what Stevens has done: shone a light on the Israelophobia that stinks up the modern left
It takes courage to stand up to entitled potty-mouths of the modern left. It takes even more to torch their most cherished dogma, the lie upon which they’ve built their entire phony morality: namely, that Israel is committing “genocide” and it falls to smug Ivy Leaguers in keffiyehs to stop it. Yet that’s what Stevens has done: shone a light on the Israelophobia that stinks up the modern left.
Abdul El-Sayed has got the left hot under the collar. They love his Bernie Bro chat about Medicare for All, taxing billionaires and building affordable housing. But it’s his Israel-bashing that really gets them going. He calls the Gaza War a “genocide.” He says Israel is an “apartheid” state. It’s delicious red meat for a radical left consumed by loathing for the Jewish state.
It has fallen to Ms. Stevens to wonder if it’s all going a little too far. If the left’s red-hot hatred for the Jewish homeland is fueled more by bigotry than pacifism. She has slammed El-Sayed for suggesting America’s affordability crisis is down to DC’s funding of Israel. She has criticized him for mingling with Twitcher Hasan Piker, who called Zionism a “mental illness” and once said “it doesn’t matter if rapes fucking happened on October 7.”
There is unquestionably a stench around the El-Sayed campaign. He’s been dogged by questions about his family’s alleged support for the Muslim Brotherhood (El-Sayed has said he has “never been a member of the Muslim Brotherhood”). In March, when a Lebanese-born man attacked a Michigan synagogue packed with kids, reportedly out of anger over Israel’s attacks on Hezbollah, El-Sayed said “hurt people hurt people.” Oof. He later apologized.
Then there was the rancid TV ad produced by El-Sayed backer, Cenk Uygur. He’s the emotionally incontinent left-wing YouTuber you’ve probably seen shouting at people on Piers Morgan’s show. His ad showed a couple struggling to pay for their groceries. Then it dawns on them why they’re so skint: because their money is being spent on “killing Palestinians.”
Shorter version: those bloody Jews. Life in America would be grand if only the murderous Jewish state didn’t have its long, bony fingers in our public purse.
The ad was even too much for El-Sayed’s team, who disavowed it. But it was indicative of the moral cesspit into which the transatlantic left is tumbling. Their supposedly “anti-war” position on Israel has curdled into a kind of medieval paranoia, where every domestic problem is now seen as having a single, sinister foreign architect. You Know Who.
“We can’t stand with hate,” said Ms. Stevens of all this swirling animus for the Jewish nation. Naturally she’s been branded a sore loser. She lost to El-Sayed in the Michigan Democratic primary in August. Initially she agreed to door-knock for him. But after she called on him to condemn the anti-Semitic rhetoric of some of his followers, he said she was “no longer welcome” on his trail. That’s when she threw her lot in with Mike Rogers. (El-Sayed has said “Anti-Semitism is a scourge, and we need to address it in all its forms”).
But she’s raising incredibly important questions. There is something off about the edgy new Dems and their one-eyed loathing for Israel. They used to call it the Socialism of Fools when leftists blamed Jews for the ills of capitalism. It smacks of the Anti-Imperialism of Fools for the left to now blame the Jewish state for economic turmoil. Different century, same bigotry.
As a Brit, I wish Americans would listen to Stevens. Believe me, you don’t want to be dragged any further down the road of Islamo-leftism.
Might the Dems one day end up like our Green party, which had a candidate who raged about “Jewish cockroaches” and which has members who cheered the mass murder of Jews on October 7, and which last month voted for the erasure of the Jewish homeland?
The signs are worrying. The wife of Zohran Mamdani – the godhead of these “new Dems” – liked social-media posts appearing to gush over October 7. The radical Dem standing in today’s election in the 13th congressional district of New York – Darializa Avila Chevalier – attended an anti-Israel demo in NYC on October 8, 2023. The Jews were still collecting their dead. You couldn’t have waited a few days?
These are worrying developments. Yet the Democratic establishment seems clueless. Those old fools are so excited to see fresh faces in their ranks that they are happy to overlook that some of them are spouting crazy, even anti-civilizational views.
Britain’s Labour party was once conquered by freaks whose hatred for Israel often crossed the line into something even darker – are the Dems next? Don’t hate Haley – listen to her.
