One woman was killed and 29 others injured in an Islamist attack on a Berlin Pride event at Tiergarten Park on Saturday. The perpetrator, Abdul Ballout, rammed a van into the crowds at Berlin’s largest LGBT event, and then went on a stabbing rampage with a machete. Ballout was shot dead by the police in a manhunt on Sunday evening.
According to the Berlin public prosecutor’s office, 21-year-old Ballout, of Lebanese heritage and described as having been part of Berlin’s ‘Islamic scene’, had a criminal record which included assault and robbery convictions as a juvenile in 2022. Last year, Ballout travelled to Lebanon, attempting to join the Islamic State in Syria. In May, Ballout was sentenced to prison for a year and 10 months for ‘preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state’. However, the decision was deferred.
In Germany, this is a repeat of a familiar story. In 2020, 20-year-old Syrian man identified as ‘Abdullah A’ stabbed a gay couple to death in Dresden, having previously faced juvenile conviction for his affiliation with the Islamic State, and having been classified by the authorities as an ‘Islamist threat’. Abdullah A had been found guilty of constructing suicide vests in tandem with Islamic State militants, and was sentenced to two years and nine months in juvenile prison.
Deploying underage operatives in the West has been a growing strategy of jihadist groups. Earlier this month, 19-year-old Lancashire resident Muhammad Billal was jailed, having been affiliated with the Islamic State since the age of 13. In 2024, a 12-year-old was intercepted while aiming to carry out an Islamic State attack in France. A major reason the Islamic State and other jihadist groups have been hiring underage militants is because they know that local laws would allow them to be released after minimal sentences.
There has been a surge in underage jihadist manoeuvres across Europe since the 7 October 2023 Hamas-led massacre in Israel and the start of the war in Gaza. According to the European Union Situation and Trend Report 2026, of the 347 individuals arrested in connection with jihadist terror, 108 were 18 or younger. Much of the Islamist recruitment is carried out online with digital versions of Islamic State magazines such as Dabiq, Rumiyah, and more recently Voice of Khorasan, propagated on various social media platforms.
Jihadist outfits from the Islamic State to Boko Haram have also been using artificial intelligence for a wide gamut of operations, ranging from drone strikes in the Middle East and North Africa to forging material for the consumption of gullible Muslim youth in the West. Despite cybersecurity crackdown on radical Islamic literature, jihadist propaganda has continued to find space on various social media sites, especially TikTok, which has been referred to in recent years as ‘CaliphateTok’. As a juvenile, Berlin Pride attacker Ballout had been found guilty of posting Islamic State literature on his Instagram account.
Even though jihadists might be incorporating the latest tech in their arsenal, their most potent tool remains 1,400 years old: the violence codified in Islamic scriptures. Gory homophobic violence, carried out by the Berlin Pride attacker, is rooted in Islamic theology, which is why Islam remains the only religion that still upholds death for homosexuality in 11 Muslim-majority countries. The Quranic tales of violent penalties against the ‘people of Lut’, for ‘sexual deviancy’, aren’t just a part of jihadist literature spread by the Islamic State online, but are also narrated by numerous Islamic clerics in mosques and madrassas across Europe. Even though many of these clerics have found a legal loophole in the West by endorsing violent punishments against the LGBT community only in Islamic states, their murderous rhetoric directly motivates homophobic attacks in the West such as the 2016 Orlando club massacre and the 2022 Oslo shooting.
The greatest boost to the goals of radical Islamists comes from the liberal left
Even as Islamist propaganda continues to dub homosexuality a ‘western ploy’ to spread kafir, or infidel culture, which Muslim girls as young as 14 have been tasked with enacting violent retribution against Europe, another major target of Islamist bloodlust in the West has been the Jewish population. Judeophobic violence was at a record high last year, as punctuated by the Bondi Beach massacre in Sydney, which was also carried out by an Islamic State affiliate. Numerous other Islamist attacks have been carried out across Europe, from Skopje, to London – the latter reporting at least ten such manoeuvres in April and May this year. Many of these attacks, too, involve digital recruitment and proliferation of Islamic literature that endorses genocidal violence against Jews. This gory animosity against Jews, especially in light of the war in Gaza, prompts Muslim children to take up arms, as exhibited by the 15-year-old who stabbed an Orthodox Jewish man in Zurich in 2024, having previously expressed solidarity with the Islamic State.
While radical Islamists, whether in the Muslim world, or Europe, remain murderously true to their ideology, perhaps the greatest boost to their goals in the West comes from the liberal left that is all too willing to forego every principle to feed the notion of Muslim victimhood that jihadists feed on. This surrender is especially sadistic when LGBT rights groups rally on behalf of Iran or Hamas, radical Islamist entities that codify violence against the very communities these groups claim to champion the rights of. Attacks such as the one in Berlin will continue to transpire till there is consensus to uproot the threat posed by Islamists to hard-earned freedoms in the West.
