Steerpike

Although Nigel Farage referred to his new political rival Al Murray as the first 'serious opponent' he has encountered in South Thanet, not all of Ukip are amused that The Pub Landlord is running for the seat their leader is after. David Coburn, the Ukip MEP for Scotland, has got himself embroiled in a Twitter spat with the Oxbridge educated comedian, accusing him of 'mocking the voters of Thanet South'. @DavidCoburnUKip @Independent did I go to a better Uni than you? Ah well — Al Murray (@almurray) January 15, 2015 @DavidCoburnUKip @Independent having a punt at my education not much better. — Al Murray (@almurray) January 15, 2015 @DavidCoburnUKip @Independent *your. There's that Uni education again.

Tomorrow, parliament will debate a topic of immense significance. Steerpike hears that Tory peer Lord McColl is planning on championing a great repressed minority, in a land that claims to be free. Not so much a political hot potato, rather a hot sheep stomach stuffed with the animal’s heart, liver and lungs. Since 1971 haggis has been banned in the States, denying the 24 million Americans who claim to be of Scottish descent (with varying degrees of credibility), from celebrating Burns Night properly. Behind the scenes there has been a long lobbying campaign to have the ban overturned, aimed at Defra and the US Embassy, and spearheaded by Ranald Macdonald, owner of Boisdale, whose four restaurants alone serve 4.5 tonnes of the offal stuff every year.

It was no expenses spared last night at One Great George Street to toast the departure of long-time Andrew Marr Show editor Barney Jones. Most ‘leaving dos’ in journalism involve a few beers down the Dog and Duck but Aunty was an extremely kind benefactor, providing fine wines and canapés as well as music from Nick Lowe across three of the most expensive function rooms in Westminster. Three cheers for the licence fee! Ed Miliband and George Osborne were there, alongside half the cabinet including Danny Alexander and Michael Fallon. Andrew Mitchell and David Davis plotted in the corner while Harriet Harman and Peter Hain represented Labour.

Ed Miliband's popularity may be at an all time low, but the leader of the Labour party is at least now moving in A-list circles. The Telegraph reports that Miliband recently enjoyed a supper at the mansion of Geoffrey Robertson QC, the human rights barrister, which both George and Amal Clooney attended. Mrs Clooney is a barrister at Doughty Street, Robertson's chambers. While the quality of Miliband's general dinner party chat remains unknown, he is thought to have discussed with the Hollywood couple proposals for 'fresh sanctions on Vladimir Putin's regime' following the case of Sergei Maginitsky,  the Russian whistleblower who died after months of beatings in prison.

After Nick Hewer announced last month that he will not return for the eleventh series of The Apprentice, Lord Sugar ought to take care that he doesn't end up having to recruit two new sidekicks. When Steerpike last caught up with Karren Brady, the recently appointed Baroness Brady of Knightsbridge would not confirm her return for the next series. Instead, she suggested that her seat in the House of Lords would factor into her decision. ‘Ah well, I just have to check my availability and my schedule. I’ve now joined the House of Lords,’ Brady told Mr S. The 45-year-old businesswoman took her seat in the House of Lords in November when she was introduced to the House by Lord Sugar, the Labour peer.

There were very few smiles at Downing Street this afternoon as a mustard clad Angela Merkel spoke of a 'moving moment'. Yet that steely resolve had to crack eventually and with the final question at her joint press conference with David Cameron, the German Chancellor's perma-frown turned into an impish grin for just a split second. Scolding ITV's Tom Bradby, Mrs Merkel announced that she 'never answered speculative questions' and she certainly would not be starting today, danke very much. 'I think the policy of not answering speculative questions will make all press conferences much shorter in the future', piped up David Cameron, seeing a chance to wrap things up. 'Another excellent German invention'.
