It’s been many years since the Labour party first idolised the Soviet Union, but it appears that the left’s lingering love affair with communist states is still hard to shake off. The Labour MP Richard Burgon kept the red flag flying last night when he appeared on Iain Dale’s LBC radio show. As the panel discussed the way the UK should deal with the threat of China, Burgon chided his fellow panel member for saying that the communist state has tentacles around the world, arguing this could fuel ‘anti-Chinese racism in our society’.

Oh no! What’s behind the cancellation of GETTR’s ‘Counter Conference’? The right wing festival – due to take place later this month – had promised to tackle cancel culture with a roster of speakers featuring Nigel Farage, Laurence Fox and several US Trump supporters. The organisers had ambitiously booked the O2 Indigo Centre, which has a capacity of almost 3,000.  Only they have now cancelled the event with GETTR, the Trumpists answer to Twitter, putting it down to new travel restrictions which mean arrivals to the UK need to self isolate until they have received their day two Covid test result.

Since Liz Truss was appointed Foreign Secretary in Boris Johnson's reshuffle, she has upped the ante when it comes to the visual element of the job. As well as appointing a new special adviser focussed on social media (who can no doubt compete with Rishi Sunak's own social media whizz kid Cass Horowitz), Truss rarely misses a photo opp whether it's for Instagram or tomorrow's front pages.  Today is no exception. After warning this morning ahead of a meeting of Nato counterparts in Latvia that a Russian incursion into Ukraine would be a strategic mistake, Truss appears to have adopted the view that a picture can say a thousand words. The Foreign Secretary has been photographed riding in a tank in Estonia.

It may be the worst kept secret in France but Eric Zemmour will tomorrow announce his candidacy for his country's presidential election, according to a source on his campaign team.  It is, in one sense, confirmation of the obvious: it's been clear for some months now to everyone who follows French politics that Monsieur Z is running for the Élysée Palace in 2022. His supposed book promotion tour was nakedly a series of political campaign rallies. Two days ago he released a campaign; now it is about to become official.  But the timing is nonetheless interesting since Zemmour has had a difficult few days. The polls suggest his soaring popularity has lost a little momentum. His trip to London on the 19 and 20 November was fraught with aggravation.

As a former court room, the No. 9 Downing Street briefing hub has seen its fair share of drama – and none more so than this past year. Some £2.9 million was lavished on turning the site into a state-of-the-art stage for press conferences, amid plans to televise government briefings with the parliamentary lobby. But all that changed in April when, following the departure of Dominic Cummings and Lee Cain, the idea was scrapped, with Allegra Stratton moved from lobby briefings to the COP26 beat. But what to do with the newly-restored press room, newly decked out in royal blue and Union Jacks aplenty?

It's the SNP's second annual national conference this weekend and already the organ-grinders are turning out their favourite hits. The National – a self-described newspaper in breach of the Trade Descriptions Act – has again combined the stridency of Pravda with the editorial values of the Beano. Adoring coverage of the conference was kicked off with its opening day headline: "'Shameful' Tory plan for 'Union division' in the army" – a 'story' about the British Army being, er, proud of Britain. Elsewhere Kate Forbes, the neophyte nationalist, has insisted that independence, not health or education, will dominate the four-day rally – because God forbid the state of public services be of interest to the party or the nation.

For months now, Mr S has chronicled the tribulations of Susan Aitken, who is the first SNP leader of Glasgow City Council and appears determined to be the last, too. She has presided over a waste crisis in which refuse-strewn streets have become a familiar sight even in the city's leafier suburbs and which threatened to embarrass locals on the world stage ahead of COP26.  Challenged on this, Aitken insisted Glasgow needed only 'a spruce up’. When that didn't work, she trained her fire on her critics, detecting in the concerns of the GMB union ‘a real echo of the language that some far-right organisations have used’ and telling Sir Keir Starmer he was ‘on pretty shaky ground as a London MP, coming up and telling Glasgow that we’re filthy’.

After eighteen months of Covid, it was with a sense of relief and joy that MPs, peers, bag-carriers and hangers-on descended on London's Rosewood Hotel. After all the twists and turns of the pandemic’s politics, ministers and opposite numbers enjoyed the chance to break bread and hear from some of Parliament's leading figures collecting gongs at tonight's awards. The guest of honour at the shindig was the recently-defenestrated Robert Buckland, liberated from high office and now enjoying his new-found freedom on the back benches. And it was with great delight that he dispensed the awards all evening, with heavyweights and grandees dispensing jokes and jibes alike.

'China Spy Blitz' blared the Sun this morning: 'UK spooks hiring Mandarin speakers in cyber war.' Spy bosses, the paper reports, are embarking on a recruitment drive, directed at people who speak the language or have grown up within a multilingual family, with MI5, MI6 and GCHQ all increasingly wary about a moment of reckoning with the Communist superpower. Yet while the secret services have woken up to the threat posed by Beijing, others within government appear to still be fast asleep. Newly obtained figures reveal that the number of fluent Mandarin speakers within the Foreign Office (FCDO) has dropped by nearly 10 per cent since 2016.

Oh dear. Boris Johnson's much-trailed speech to the Confederation of British Industry has caused something of a social media storm – but not for the reasons the Prime Minister will have wanted.  In a confused, shambling performance, the Tory premier lost his place repeatedly throughout the speech and spent three minutes riffing on his family trip yesterday to a theme park based on the fictitious children's cartoon Peppa Pig. He asked the assembled businessmen 'Hands up how many of you here have been to Peppa Pig World?' before adding: A pig that was rejected by the BBC, now exported to 180 countries around the world. No Whitehall civil servant could have come up with Peppa.
