The outlets blaming Trump for his own assassination attempt

Within twenty-four hours of the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump, several outlets were calling on his fellow Republicans to tone down their violent rhetoric. On ABC’s morning show, Martha Raddatz and George Stephanopoulos cited what they called “conspiracy theories going forward” and stated that “President Trump and his supporters have contributed to this rhetoric as well.” On CBS, Margaret Brennan grilled Steve Scalise, who himself narrowly survived the Alexandria, Virginia softball field mass shooting by a Bernie Sanders campaign volunteer.

Donald Trump should nominate a Supreme Court Justice today

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear: the Bulwark is fretting that he who shall not be named might, sneaky devil that he is, try to exercise the legitimate powers of his office and nominate someone to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died on Friday at 87 after a long battle with cancer. Listen: ‘If Trump and Republicans replace Ginsburg it will destroy the remaining public legitimacy of the Supreme Court. Full stop.’ ‘Full stop’ indeed, but not quite in the way intended. What planet does this missive arrive from? ‘If Republicans choose this route, their ruthlessness would have resulted in not one, but two SCOTUS seats that will be widely regarded as stolen. And worse: stolen by a president who was himself elected despite a decisive loss in the popular vote.

Neocons come home to roost

Dolphins returned to the canals of Venice during the COVID-19 lockdown, and neoconservatives are returning to the Democratic party. Bill Kristol and his colleagues at the Bulwark support Joe Biden for president, even though an anti-Trump Republican of sorts briefly jumped into the race. Michigan congressman Justin Amash earned the esteem of the Kristol crew when he collaborated with Democrats to impeach Donald Trump last year. But the Bulwark feared that if Amash was on the ballot as the Libertarian party’s presidential nominee, he’d take votes away from Biden.

Alexander Nazaryan, the national correspondent at Yahoo! News, has a new book out – The Best People, pillorying the Trump administration’s staffing. And guess what? The NeverTrumper set is throwing a book party for him in New York in June, Cockburn has learned. The shindig will be held at the home of the new it girl of the Never Trump clique: Molly Jong-Fast, the daughter of northeastern blue-bloods Erica Jong and Jonathan Fast. MJF is known most for her libertine parents, her partial-renunciation of their antics and a weirdly massive Twitter following. She’s now contributing editor of The Bulwark, the Studio 54 of out-of-power, baby boomer conservatives.

Why is the Bulwark bullying Victor Davis Hanson?

Why does everyone have it in for Victor Davis Hanson? Professor, Hoover Institution fellow and farmer, Hanson is a consummate scholar of military history and ancient Greece. His literary accomplishments include paeans to American agrarianism and epoch-spanning histories of war, lauded by left and right. Yet the bipartisan goodwill has lately evaporated. The reason for the contempt is easily apprehensible: Hanson’s new book is titled, simply, The Case for Trump.The repercussions have been swift. Isaac Chotiner of the New Yorker accused Hanson of ‘hostility to undocumented Mexican and Central American immigrants.

An exhaustive list of ‘Conservative Critics’ from The Bulwark

News from the #NeverTrump bubble, as Weekly Standard spinoff site The Bulwark have decided to keep tally of every conservative who expresses discomfort or opposition to Trump’s declaration of a national emergency for wall money. It’s an ambitious branching out into listicles for the site, whose preferred format up until that point had been ‘please, someone, anyone, primary Trump’. Their piece, entitled ‘Conservative Critics of Trump’s Non-Emergency Declaration, Listed’, categorizes opponents of the executive cash grab by their area of work.
