We will survive Defence Secretary Wes Streeting told us to prepare for war in three years’ time and to keep emergency food and water at home. What did the infamous Protect and Survive leaflet prepared by the Labour government in 1976 and published by Margaret Thatcher’s government in 1980 advise? – Householders were told to build an inner shelter as far away from external walls as possible. Residents of bungalows and flats on the top two floors were told to try to find somewhere else to shelter. – People were advised to store three-and-a-half gallons of drinking water per person and the same amount for washing, and to stock tinned food: an illustration showed soup and tinned potatoes.
