Behind the Trump-DeSantis influencer Twitter bloodbath

Forget the campaign trail: the real Trump-DeSantis fight is spilling out on Twitter. Conservative influencers who support the respective campaigns are duking it out on Elon Musk's app — and it's getting personal. The Twitter beef ostensibly started with Trump supporters growing antsy over the prospect of a "disloyal" DeSantis running against the president who swung his governor's race, then devolved into policy fights over DeSantis and Trump's handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and Trump's ability to win the general. The arguments have since spiraled into nasty scuttlebutt. One prominent example featured New York Young Republicans chairman Gavin Wax and a handful of DeSantis surrogates.

Is Jon Stewart trying to be the head of the Democratic Party?

Jon Stewart has been a pretty busy guy lately. Not only is he hosting a new show-cum-podcast, The Problem with Jon Stewart, but he’s also been spending a good chunk of time in Cockburn’s hometown, Washington DC. Stewart has been making the waves while campaigning for HR. 3967, otherwise known as the Honoring our PACT Act of 2022, as he bashed Ted Cruz for initially not supporting it. His on-the-ground activism in DC garnered media attention this week after he held a press conference with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Jon Tester. Stewart made a passionate plea that would make Matthew McConaughey proud. The TV host also found himself embroiled in a spat with conservative firebrands Jack Posobiec and Raheem Kassam.

It’ll be alt-right on the night

We’ve all got a bit of Deplorable in us, even me. To paraphrase the philosopher who left the White House in 2016, I cling to my religion because it’s the tree of life. Being rather Old World as well as old school, I’m appalled by the proliferation of advanced weaponry in the US, but I favor the right to cling to some kind of gun. And having spent more time in the academy than is healthy or useful, I can confirm the ongoing accuracy of William F. Buckley’s observation about the repository of wisdom that is the first 300 names in the Cambridge, Mass. phone book. But I don’t like Steve Bannon. I’m only fascinated by him. Bannon is the West’s foremost proponent of classic left-wing revolutionary strategies.

Inside Raheem Kassam’s ‘Transatlantic Right Wing Spring Fling’

Cockburn doesn’t mind a cocktail or two, but he wasn’t sure if he could stomach the ‘Raheem is Daddy’ special on offer at the Nigel Farage party last night at CPAC. Kassam is a particularly proud boy at the moment, and perhaps understandably so. He’s just bought Human Events, the media company, with his ally Will Chamberlain and his party had a celebratory and very boozy atmosphere. Raheem himself called it ‘The Transatlantic Right Wing Spring Fling.’ ‘Feel free to say how hot my date was,’ he said. His party was an ‘off-the-record’ (but not for you, dear reader) knees-up at Pose Nightclub, upstairs at CPAC, and a veritable ‘who’s that’ of conservative personae, including several folk who were too damn dangerous for access to the convention proper.

Robinson banned, Kassam disabled: Facebook cracks down on the harder right

Does Facebook have a grudge against the right? It’s an accusation that’s been leveled against Mark Zuckerberg before — notably in a Congressional hearing last year — and is rearing its head again, with the suspension of two British right-wing broadcasters, Tommy Robinson and Raheem Kassam. Robinson, the founder of the English Defence League, has been permanently banned from Facebook and Instagram for ‘repeatedly breaching’ their Community Standards by ‘posting material that uses dehumanizing language and calls for violence targeted at Muslims’, according to a Facebook blog post. ‘What they’re saying about me is complete lies,’ Robinson told Cockburn this morning. ‘What they’re saying about “hate” is all lies.
