Why everyone is talking about Bill Belichick

In early May, the 73-year-old former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick published The Art of Winning, an autobiography of sorts, laying out the principles that made him the greatest coach in the history of professional football. It’s the book fans have been waiting to read for 20 years. Yet hardly anyone noticed, not even people thrilled at the prospect of Belichick’s move to the University of North Carolina next fall – his first crack at coaching college ball. People are distracted by his relationship with a 24-year-old beauty queen: two-time Miss Maine finalist Jordon Hudson. You can see why. Forty-nine years is an attention-grabbing age difference and Hudson is a force in her own right.

Congressman Gronk? Legendary NFL tight end ‘not ruling out’ running for office

Rob Gronkowski may be retired from the NFL, but he and his Frenchie pup Ralphie were the MVPs of Congress as it returned from summer recess this week. The former Patriots and Buccaneers tight end even fueled some speculation that he’d seek to join the esteemed body down the road. Gronkowski took the Hill with bipartisan acclaim, bringing his talents to the nation’s capital to push Congress to #squashsuperbugs, like Valley fever. Gronk took up this new cause shortly after adopting Ralphie (and also shortly after he won his fourth Super Bowl).

Tom Brady’s transgressive excellence

Tom Brady was never the most approachable quarterback in the NFL. That would be Peyton Manning, who just last weekend brought down the house on Saturday Night Live. Aaron Rodgers is probably more athletic; Patrick Mahomes and Matthew Stafford have those cannon-fire arms. Lamar Jackson knows when to run the ball, while any number of QBs might be said to be faster. Yet it's Brady who is indisputably the greatest of all time. Somehow the geeky kid from that rookie weigh-in photo all the way back in 2000, the one who looked like he spent too much time brooding in a computer lab, blossomed into a force of nature the likes of which the professional sports world has never known.

Maroon 5, America 0

If Super Bowl LIII served no other purpose in this late Roman phase of the American republic, at least it reminded everyone of the Latin numerals. The first half ended III-0, and the halftime entertainment was low-scoring too. II out of X to Adam Levine, Maroon 5 — who at least could have named themselves Maroon V for the occasion — and a cast of several dozen. Maroon 5 sound like a wedding band playing Jamiroquai covers, though it is hard to imagine anyone wishing to soundtrack their special day with ‘This Love’. On this occasion, they were everybody’s fifth choice. Cardi B spoke on Friday of her anguish at turning down an invitation to perform at Atlanta.
