Madison Cawthorn will be leaving Congress, after he was beaten in Tuesday's primary election by opponent Chuck Edwards. And perhaps no one will miss the North Carolina Republican more than Cockburn. To the in memoriam reel now: there was the time Cawthorn tried to sneak a gun past airport security, the time he accused his fellow Republicans of having orgies, the other time he tried to sneak a gun past airport security. And, of course, there was that unseeable video, the one of Cawthorn lying in bed naked with another man. That picture was released by the Democratic PAC American Muckrakers, which also runs the subtly named FireMadison.com. Now that American Muckrakers has gotten its wish, the group is reportedly turning its sights on another right-wing member of Congress.

Republicans steal the show in HBO’s The Swamp

It’s quite rare for Republicans to get a starring role in the entertainment industry, let alone on an HBO production. The Swamp, a new documentary, is a fascinating exception.The documentary mainly focuses on the bipartisan effort to stop corruption in DC through reforms on issues like party leadership influence, campaign spending, lobbying and executive war power. HBO tells this story mainly through the lenses of Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida and Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, who have their own respective attempts at bipartisan legislative reforms during a partisan impeachment impeachment. But Cockburn wasn’t that taken with the public policy. There are too many humorous moments in the documentary to focus on such tedium. Here are the real highlights.

Katie Hill’s rehabilitation tour is a failure of media ethics

Former congresswoman Katie Hill is currently engaged in one of the biggest public gaslighting campaigns ever seen outside of Trumpworld. And she has the willing assistance of the mainstream media. Since her resignation last October, Hill has been under the cloud of an ethics investigation for abusing her position to have affairs with junior staff members and then using congressional resources to cover her sins up. This includes the payment of a $5,000 bonus to her own campaign finance director, with whom she was also having an affair. In the wake of a naked photo scandal and her admission of a sexual relationship with a campaign subordinate, Rep. Katie Hill has announced her intention to resign. Hill was often referred to as America’s 'millennial' candidate throughout her campaign. Perhaps therefore it should come as no surprise that her resignation letter was filled not with remorse, regret or even a real apology, but instead with attempts to blame only others and never herself. The Hill controversy has inspired bifurcated reactions, some — not all — of which have broken down along partisan lines. The progressive Twitterati has been eager to seize on the parts of the story emphasizing Hill’s identity as a victim.

In defense of Katie Hill

Rep. Katie Hill has had quite the week. RedState, a conservative blog, posted an accusatory article about her, accompanied by nude photos and screenshots of private messages. The photos reveal a formerly secret relationship between Hill and her campaign staffer Morgan Desjardins. And the story claims Hill, her former husband, and Desjardins were in a 'throuple' relationship. RedState also published allegations that Hill was sexually involved with a male congressional staff member — which Hill denies. Many are upset about the accusations and Hill’s GOP challenger is calling for her to step down from Congress, citing her behavior as inexcusable. This is absurd. Yes, Hill did make arguably inappropriate decisions as a sitting congresswoman.
