Young people should drink more, no great story starts with salad

According to a recent Gallup poll, young Americans are drinking less than ever before. Two-thirds of adults aged 18 to 34 now believe even moderate drinking harms their health, up from 30 percent in 2001. Only half say they drink at all, down from 59 percent in 2023, the lowest figure since Gallup began tracking alcohol consumption in 1939. What is happening to young people in America?Possible explanations pile up: a new obsession with health, better information about alcohol’s effects, swapping gin and tonics for weed or vaping, the cruel economics of $18 cocktails, or the quiet lure of staying home, where TikTok and Netflix bring the world to your couch instead of you having to find it in a crowded bar.

Why is American pride at an all-time low?

Lee Greenwood may be “Proud to be an American,” but the same can't be said for a growing number of his countrymen and women. Those who identify as “extremely” or “very” proud to be American has dropped from 87 percent in 2001 to 58 percent in 2025.  In 2001, Republicans, Independents and Democrats were all within six points of each other in their reported national pride. But now there's a 56-point divide between Republicans (92 percent) and Democrats (36 percent). Republicans stay patriotic regardless of the presidency, while Democrats have dropped 24 percent since Trump's inauguration this year. Beyond political affiliation, it seems the younger a generation is, the less American pride its members have.

Kids with conservative parents are happier

Welcome back to Culture Shock! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and is gearing up for the big winter storm that is supposed to hit the east coast this weekend. The latest models in the DMV suggest we’re mostly getting sleet, which is a bit disappointing after years of mild winters and very little snow. This was my first Christmas since getting married, and it’s tough to figure out how to divide time between your family and your in-laws. We decided to spend Christmas Eve with my family and then flew to Florida on Christmas morning to see my husband’s family for a couple of days. I am very lucky in that pretty much all of my family members are conservative, so our political arguments are limited in scope.

Is Mike Pence Don Quixote?

Welcome to Thunderdome, your weekly update on all the crazy that 2024 has to offer! Thanks for listening to our weekly podcast, the latest edition of which is available here — and yes, we start off by talking about golf and soccer, but don’t worry: we don’t focus on important things for too long. There’s presidential stakes to be talking about, and questions to answer! Like: who is Doug Burgum, and why is Doug Burgum? Let’s get to it. Christie the kamikaze, or Pence the pure of heart? Everyone assumes that Chris Christie is going to be the thorn in the side of Donald Trump on the debate stage in August. But what if he isn’t?
