Peter Murrell pleads guilty to embezzling £400,000 from the SNP

It appears in politics, as in life, there’s no such thing as a free campervan. Today, Peter Murrell – the former chief executive of the Scottish National Party and husband of Nicola Sturgeon – has pleaded guilty to embezzling £400,000 from his party.

Earlier this year, Murrell had been accused of illicitly purchasing luxury goods – including jewellery, cosmetics, a Jaguar and a motorhome – worth just under £460,000. At the High Court in Edinburgh today it was revealed that this sum had been reduced to £400,310.65 after a deal was reached with prosecutors.

Murrell was remanded in custody and is expected to be sentenced on 23 June. The judge, Lord Young, said he was guilty of a ‘gross breach of trust’.

Police Scotland said:

‘Peter Murrell has shown utter contempt for the high public trust placed in him as the Chief Executive of a political party and his position in the wider political establishment in Scotland for many years. He abused his privileged position with access to Scottish National Party funds to divert cash into his own accounts and bankroll the lavish lifestyle he craved but could not afford. From 2010 to 2022 he spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on luxury goods while carefully trying to hide his criminality with false receipts and accounting. He must now face the consequences of his actions.’

Murrell’s plea, Mr S suspects, will come as a relief to former first minister Nicola Sturgeon, who announced she was divorcing Murrell last year. In 2025, Police Scotland said that Sturgeon was no longer being investigated as part of Operation Branchform after she was arrested and released without charge the previous year. She has denied any wrongdoing.

Still, it just goes to show: for all the chaos in Westminster, Scotland reigns supreme when it comes to political scandal…
