Labour has once again descended into infighting because swathes of its members and trade union chums remain unable to comprehend what a woman is. Four major unions this week announced a boycott of the party’s official women’s conference after those with a penis were politely asked to sit this one out.
ASLEF, the Musicians’ Union, USDAW and Unison – the largest union in the country – will no longer send delegates to the event in September. Trans individuals have been invited to participate in fringe events but, following the Supreme Court’s statement of the blindingly obvious that biological sex is determined by biology, they will not be able to take part in debates on the conference floor.
In another desperately tragic attempt to virtue signal at the expense of hard-fought women’s rights, a spokesperson for Unison, one of Labour’s largest bankrollers, said: ‘The union’s decided against sending a delegation to Labour women’s conference this year. This is because the party’s restrictions on access run counter to Unison’s policy on trans equality.’
Labour Women’s Declaration, a rare voice of sanity in Andy Burnham’s circus, condemned the boycott as a ‘disappointing and petulant act of performative politics’. The organisation accused union barons of ‘demonstrating how out of touch’ they are, adding: ‘We hope union leaders will reconsider their decision and engage in the constructive dialogue that their members have every right to expect from their representatives.’
Don’t hold your breath. For all their talk of solidarity, the unions appear remarkably determined to leave women standing alone.
