Founded over 50 years ago, Italian shoemaker Santoni has earned a reputation for quality, craftsmanship, and its commitment to “beauty through the hands.” Today, Giuseppe Santoni oversees the company founded by his father, Andrea, and remains committed to the philosophy behind the “Made in Santoni” mark found on every shoe it produces.

“It is not simply a place of origin; it means ‘made by our hands,’” says Giuseppe. “Every step – from design to craftsmanship to final result – expresses a single, unmistakable standard of excellence,” he continues. “Our hands think, imagine, and create. They translate intuition into form, and knowledge into detail. Beauty is always found in the detail, where emotion, precision, and care reveal themselves most clearly.” Above all, he says, it is about establishing “a dialogue between those who create and those who wear our pieces.”

‘It allows them to express their preferences, their sensibility, and ultimately, their identity’

The concept of dialogue between maker and client is crucial to Santoni’s vision – ensuring that the customer feels part of the process and facilitating levels of interaction in the design and manufacture of their shoe via a company-wide ecosystem they describe as “One of One.”

“Whether through bespoke, Made to Order or instant personalization, the program is designed to invite each client into the creative process,” he says. “It allows them to express their preferences, their sensibility, and ultimately, their identity. In this way, what we create together is not just a product, but something that carries personal meaning.”

This philosophy reaches its ultimate realization in Santoni’s “One of Kind” bespoke service for men and women. This begins with a personal consultation, where a bespoke manager and master artisan guide the client through their journey. They start by making eight precise measurements of the foot. From these, a unique personalized wooden last is sculpted, which is further refined through subsequent fittings until some 16 to 20 weeks later, the final creation takes shape.

The Made to Order experience – “One Yours”– allows customers to reinterpret Santoni’s iconic silhouettes through over 130 material and color combinations. By the end of 2026, this will extend to a fully integrated online configurator, offering the chance to choose one’s preferences digitally, without losing sight of Santoni’s strong artisanal identity.

Additionally, the brand has recently introduced “One Live” – its most immediate iteration of the One of One program, whereby customization is available in real time and in-store. This includes giving clients the ability to pick between details such as tassels on their classic Carlo and Carla loafers, or to have initials embossed on their small leather goods – and all within 15 minutes.

What is crucial to their outlook is an understanding that the demands of a fast-paced world don’t necessarily imply a drop in quality or lack of care. “We live in a world that moves at extraordinary speed and is increasingly shaped by standardization,” explains Santoni. “With One of One, we wanted to bring dialogue, time, and the human touch back to the center of the experience.”

Giuseppe is fiercely proud that the Santoni name is thriving in the 21st century. “It means honoring the heritage of a family business and passing down the savoir-faire that has been cultivated over generations,” he says. “Every pair of shoes we create carries not only the skill of our artisans, but also the values, passion, and dedication of my family.”

But maintaining these traditions is squared with openness to innovation; seeing technology as an opportunity rather than a threat. “Preserving our identity while adapting to the contemporary world is both a responsibility and a joy,” he adds. “We are deeply anchored in our heritage yet constantly looking toward the future. This balance defines who we are.”

The emphasis on developing a strong and genuine “dialogue” with the customer also helps to build a deeper relationship over time, with a strong commitment to long-term care. Their “One Forever” aftercare program underlies the Santoni’s notion that a pair of our shoes is meant to last a lifetime – safe in the knowledge that “refreshments” (from polishing to subtle color renewal) will be carried out with the same care as went into the original making. “Constructions such as the Goodyear allow us to fully resole our shoes, extending their lifespan without compromising their structure,” Santoni says. “In this way, longevity is not an afterthought, but an integral part of our design – and a true expression of continuity over time.”

This longevity is only made possible by the quality of the materials and the integrity of the craftsmanship that Santoni guarantees. “It reflects our belief that luxury is not transactional,” says Giuseppe, “but relational.”
